This is what I got with a handheld reversed lens (with handheld camera too). Any tips or tricks to help the focus go better? I found that anything moving was impossible to shoot! None of these are cropped at all, just resized. Enjoy!

Nice shots! Which 2 lenses did you use?
08/28/2004 03:43:23 PM · #3
Sigma 100-300mm at anywhere from 100 - 200mm and a sigma 28 - 80mm reversed anywhere in the whole range mostly 80 - 35mm.

Are either of those a macro lens? What apertures are they?
08/28/2004 03:57:03 PM · #5
The 28-80 is a macro lens but I didn't use the macro feature on it, the other is a regular zoom lens. Apertures are not very good, start at f3.5 and f4.5. Most of the shots were taken at 400 ISO or higher because of so little light.

I tried doing this with the two lenses I have (18-70 F/3.4-4.6 and my 70-300 F/4-5.6) I got nice closeups BUT..I had to crop about 80% because most of the photo was blank.

I like the details on the coins. very nice.

Is there anyway to focus without moving closer or further from the object? Is it easier after getting a macro coupler like i'll be getting shortly? Where's Jacko?! You know you wanna show us how to work the magic!

No knowledge to share (as usual) but I wish somebody would post a pic of this reversed lens arrangement just so us point-and-shoot folks can marvel.

Here's a pic of the 10D with the Canon 50mm f/1.4 mounted revesed on the front of the 100mm f/28 Macro USM. A 58mm-58mm coupler ring was used, I think it cost about $8USD

oh good, somebody posted one! I'm so tired from moving today I didn't feel like posting myself.

I find that using manual vs. auto focus helps with macros. But yes gernerally you have to move closer to get focus right. I have never tried reverse mounting, could never find one of those rings needed...where did you get it?
08/29/2004 09:03:14 PM · #15
you don't need the ring to try it out, just hold it on with your hand, all my shots were done that way. linkage

Here is the result of a search for "macro coupler" on B&H Photo's site. I believe this is where I bought mine. Wow, I was only 5ยข off on the price!

curious what the - or how to - figure the magnification when using a 50mm and 105mm macro lense together.

got a macro coupler yesterday/

I'm curious now, and want to have a go reversing my 50mm f/1.8 on my sigma 100-300 but how do you focus do you set the 50mm to infinity and focus with the other?
11/18/2004 11:37:42 AM · #19
Just one word of caution...if you're using the 50 1.4 reversed, make sure to support it with your hand or something firm at all times. The filter threads are part of the lens elements which move during focusing and they were never designed to support the weight of the lens.

When I had my F717 I bought a Pentax 50mm from a used camera dealer for $50, and it produced pretty good results. Don't even try to autofocus with a reversed-lens setup - just stop down as much as possible and rock back and forth slightly until you get what you want.

he he. Exactly the same setup I use, except I still haven't got the reverse coupler ring. I'll order it on B&H soon.
Has anybody tried the reversing setup where you have just one lens and reverse it to the camera with some gadget which also plugs into the (normal) rear end of lens, presumably for AF and aperture controls?

This is taken using the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro with a Canon 50mm 1.8 mk II reversed. The starfish baby is only 1cm across.

No - I stuck the starfish to the rear element of the 50mm ;-)

Do you have to have a standard lens reversed on a telephoto lens? Or could I reverse an old Olympus 50mm f/1.8 on my Canon 50mm f/1.8 with decent results? (The canon has a 52mm thread and the olympus has a 49mm thread, coupler ring on B&H for 8 bux)

I also have the canon 18-55 kit lens and 70-200 f/4 L lens, but the thread on thad one is much larger (67mm)
