It is predictable now to have your score start in the low 5's sometime recovering most of the time not. I remember the days when a score would always start high and slowly and predictably drop throughout the challenge. I haven't seen that happen in a year. Starting low even when it rises is disheartening.

I agree, it is a trend. I doubt I will ever add to my collection of 7s with no ribbon, in these days of challenges where not even the ribbon winners are deemed worthy of a 7. However if you pull up challenge history and rank the challenges by highest average score, you get a top 12 highest average scoring challenges in 2004, 2007, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2007, 2012, 2011, 2012, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2011, 2009. It seems the average scores are quite high historically in some challenges. That said, I seem to remember the first scores of a challenge used to be very high, the happy folks picking their favorites to enjoy and score high, while these days the early voters look at voting as a chance to get out their anger. I blame some societal issue in Oceania and the Far East. They used to be such nice people.

Well, I didn't want to point any fingers. I find that that usually starts a fight if Aussies are in the room ;)

I am relatively new here - just over a year - but I participate pretty regularly. Personally, I find it much more disheartening to have the opposite happen - and it does just as often for me.

so its a problem there is a higher expectation of quality?

Personally, I'd rather start low and improve, than the opposite.

I don't know looking at the last few challenges there are not many breaking past the 7.0 barrier most are at a 6.9 or below. Back when I was entering just about every challenge a 6.9 was not even a guarantee of a ribbon let alone the blue. Now it seems the norm. Like I said you just have to be willing to adjust your expectations.

I think it is partly a result of some voters who have decided to get rid of the 5 and 6 votes so if an image is average they have to look at it and say is it a 4 or a 7. I have the tendancy to think more often than not these votes end up being 4.

That'll be me then. As you might expect I am giving more 4s but I'm giving more 7s too. Do they balance? I'm not sure but I vote on 100% and my average given in a challenge hasn't changed much at all. Early days yet though.

I wouldn't think that your average would be much different. If you gave a 5 and a 6 your average would be 5.5 if you gave a 4 and a 7 your average would also be 5.5. The change would be seen on the average score receieved not on your average score issued.

Ouch, just got hit with two 4's back to back. I was doing "okay' but that certainly hurts.

Thanks folks.

Sure, but what I was trying to show was that your contention that more often than not 5s and 6s go to 4s wasn't right - those I used to score in the middle can go either way.

.

I agree that they can go either way and I don't think there is anything wrong with your voting practice. I was just stating the fact that more voters seem to be doing this so there will an effect on the overall scores. Personally I think the most important part of voting is voting for 100% of the images in a challenge.

Damned update button: like a flame to a moth. I keep pressing it and keep getting burned. Ugh.

Must stop pressing update in some vain hope my score actually went up! Its depressing.

Ha! I was about to comment on one picture that reminds me of LVicari! Ah, too bad I had lunch before writing the comment!
