do it, its worth it, it shouldn't make you feel inadequate, it should give you something to strive to if you don't feel you are up to that level.

+1, 000
My pic will be giving last a run for its money, as it should as wow are there some great shots in there. But I've learned a couple things already so I feel better about that.

Oh I mean it. Not to happy with the voters right now. I'm actually upset for the first time about the activities of this site. Once TPL is over I'm done.

Yes TPL always attracts the lowballers, and I'm not in TPL, I'm sure yours will go up, mine got to 4.50, and climbed to 5.56 so far, it is disheartening, but in the past few weeks my scores have started low and climbed almost a full point by the end.

I have been struggling myself to hang on, but it is not just this challenge it is the new trend. To start out really low and then slowly climb. The problem is there isn't enough voters to counter act the low scores. I keep saying this is my last challenge and then I am done, but in reality I will probably keep entering here and there. I just have to ignore the scores from now on and take DPC for what I need it to be (a way to keep my creativity up). If people don't like my style anymore so be it, I just have to lower my expectation for scores.

Lowballing would effect everybody equally. Considering the ribbon winners are still getting high 6's, 7's and the odd 8, its not impossible to counteract the "lowballers", which ultimately should be negligible given the total number of votes.

TPL is based on placement, not scores, coorect?

so low balling shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know looking at the last few challenges there are not many breaking past the 7.0 barrier most are at a 6.9 or below. Back when I was entering just about every challenge a 6.9 was not even a guarantee of a ribbon let alone the blue. Now it seems the norm. Like I said you just have to be willing to adjust your expectations.

This one feels different to me. It just feels like the scoring is overall lower on this one than I expected even given the lower scoring over the past few months. It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out in the end because there are some stunners in there that I can't imagine anyone scoring low.

Correct. This is why we went for a different system than before.. TPL is not affecting the scores and the scores won't affect the TPL ... Perfect

I am completely confused, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' MAK. I assumed TPL is all about scores rather than placement from this in the TPL - Questions/Answers thread:

This is not really the thread for it but I think epsi explains far better than I can, it's a bit of both in short.

What he said.

I'm lost. I read the phrase above to mean its score based not percent based.

If it is percent based, how can you compare the percentage finish in one challenge with the percentage finish in another challenge? For example, if I enter a challenge that has ten entries and finish 2, I'd be in the 80th percentile. How can you compare that result with someone who enters a challenge that has a 100 entries and finishes 20th, also the 80th percentile? In my view, if I got a 6.5 and the other got a 6.6, I'd say the other person should get the nod even though we both hit the 80th percentile.

All of which is to emphasize that I'm lost.

I totally understand your disgust with the shift of power in voters lately but if you leave you walk EXACTLY into the corner that the 'lowballers' want you to go. Less variety and less competition. That is NOT a good combination. So stick around as a way to say "Nope, not playing that game. I'm staying!". As ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sjhuls said there has been a shift. We have had alot of people leave already that the balance has shifted towards the groups who vote lower or are very conservative. Back when we would get 170-250 votes you would have a nice even balance.

That reminds me, I'd better do some voting. To counter-balance the counter-culture. I wish the quality was higher though. It would make it easier to counter.

Well, just to be clear I intend to do just that. I'm not confused about the goal here. Don't mean to come off as being overly serious about any of this, I'm just curious about the mechanics.

I'll go puzzle over Epsi's response again and send him a PM.

Every time there is a league challenge there is a cry against strategic lowball voting, yet when the dust settles the average score for the challenges ends up being very close to the average score outside the competition.
League play pulls in more entries, and more voters, and may skew individual scoreing, but the agregate score is what it always is. Pretty pictures are favored over more challenging pictures. It has less to do with the league than the nature of the site.
I am getting hammered too, well below 5 for an image I love, and have had multiple requests for prints of. I am sorry it is scoring so poorly, but not shocked. Any other time I would care less. but I am sorry for my team mates that I did not submit a better scoring image.

because no one would enter minimal and everyone would enter expert.

doing it by scores is not the proper way, sure you look at scores as a measure of your own ability but scores based on a combination topic, editing ruleset and number of entries, i have a blue ribbon that is in danger of falling off my front page because it scored a mid 6, but i have a 7+ that didn't even ribbon.

i think placement in a given challenge is the way to go. it encourage participation in less than ideal topics and discourages low ball voting since scores don't matter.

I'm not playing in the league and I'm not complaining about my score for this challenge. But scores are down from what they were a year ago or two years ago. It is predictable now to have your score start in the low 5's sometime recovering most of the time not. I remember the days when a score would always start high and slowly and predictably drop throughout the challenge. I haven't seen that happen in a year. Starting low even when it rises is disheartening.
03/13/2013 01:34:24 PM · #49
I agree with Jenn on this, scores for me are nearly always much lower for the first 20 to 30 votes then they rise, it's worrying that that number seems to be rising as the months go by, in the recent motion blur challenge my score stayed well under a 6 for the first 40 votes only to end up at 6.9, no way that would of happened even a year ago. It could be a good thing though, if the scores don't mean diddle then I would be much more inclined to let my artistic expresion run wild and I'd probably have more fun too.

I don't know if anyone else feels the same, but i see a strong group of contenders in this challenge. I didn't fare well thus far -.- but there's a lot of material here worth study. I joined the league to push myself into a schedule where i try to shoot creatively, and stress mass appeal.. so far so good.
