What was every decided on how scores are going calculated? Is it going to be based actually on score? Or is it based on percentage (placement)?

Percentage, then adjusted through a series of calculations that take into account a variety of factors, including camera brand of choice, use of L glass, popularity, positioning on a variety of debate topics, and then finally multiplied by the number of $20 bills that the user has sent to me. (sadly all are currently multiplied by 0, leading me to suspect a league-wide tie)..

.. ;)

(By the way, the part about percentages being used in the calculation was the only true part of this post(besides this part of course, which is also true (mostly)))

To be clear, it's the percent of the placement that counts rather than score? So the blue ribbon winners from all three challenges each week will count the same no matter what their score is? Is that right? And is that adjusted at all for this week due to the choice of the two portrait challenges? Thanks.

2013 Team Photo League Rules

Team Photo League is a league-based competition between 6-photographer teams, contested within the established framework of DPC weekly challenges.

Teams will be divided into two leagues, and the leagues will compete independently of each other.

A “season” will consist of as many weeks as required for each team in a league to play each other team in that league once.

After the end of the season, the two league-winning teams will face off against each other after a 2-week hiatus to determine the Grand Champion.

Competition will take place in the three regularly-scheduled, weekly DPC challenges: currently these are the Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday challenges. Free studies and any special challenges will not count in this competition. If in any given week one or more of these three challenges is not held by DPC, then the competition will utilize whichever official challenges ARE run that week.

Team scores will be determined by the 4 best scores by team members that week. A team member may only contribute one score per week.

The winning teams get 3 pts per matchup, and the losing team gets 0 pts. In the unlikely event of a tie (team averages identical in a weekly matchup) each team will receive 1 pt that week.

A team whose 6 members all make entries in a given week will receive a 0.5 pt bonus for that week win or lose.

If fewer than 4 team members contribute an entry in a given week, the team will receive 0 pts towards its average for each player fewer than 4 to compete.

MAK, allow me to jump in and give some examples. Bear with me is not particularly simple, and the lack of html formatting make things worse....

Lets assume a match between ELYSIUM and LUCKY SEVENS, assume also that we used these challenges: Halloween IV, Comfort Food, Free Study 2012-11.

The scores are calculated as follows: each member is given the highest percentile obtained from those three challenges. Then the members of each team are sorted out from high to low percentile and compared. If the percentile difference is higher than 5% then the high percentile is declared a winner (and awarded 3 points) and the low one the loser (awarded 0 points). If the difference is less than 5% then the match is declared a tie and each member receives 1.5 points. Then the four highest individual scores are added and the team with a highest accumulated score is declared winner and awarded 3 points and the loser 0 points. If both teams have the same score then is declared a tie and 1.5 point is awarded to each team. If the six member of the teams participated each team receives extra 0.5 points

In this particular example:

ELYSIUM Percentile Challenge Individual Score Vs LUCKY SEVENS Percentile Challenge Individual Score
Tommy Mac 93.94 Halloween IV 0 Cuttooth 100.00 Comfort Food 3
blindjustice 75.61 Comfort Food 0 Budya 87.80 Comfort Food 3
Alexkc 71.64 Free Study 2012-11 3 dtremain 46.77 Free Study 2012-11 0
Epsi 71.21 Halloween IV 3 glad2badad 21.39 Free Study 2012-11 0

Dr.Confuser 67.16 Free Study 2012-11 3 MarkB Did not submit 0
fngood83 19.90 Free Study 2012-11 3 wdamman Did not submit 0

Accumulated team Scores: 6 6
Team Score: 1.5 1.5
Full Team participation Bonus: 0.5 0
Final Team Score: 2 1.5

In bold are the members that are used to calculate the final score and in bold italics the final team score.

For the actual league we won't be using the free study challenges. Note that the percentiles are calculated to a higher precision than the ones used in the site.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Max

Hmmm... I am in the business running online statistics courses. I should follow the example, but then I might ask my husband to explain it to me. Hmmm... ;)

Exactly.

Which challenges are the "two" for week 1?

Thanks for that info Max! And for the effort involved in all this.

It is interesting, I thought that in the spirit of TPL people will get rid off their inhibitions for Expert Editing. There is no evidence of that so far with just 25 entries.

How does this work? Do all the members have to participate in the same challenge, or just participate in the challenges for the week?

And is the participation of four in a single challenge, or again, for that week's challenges?

Per TPL week any challenge that counts towards TPL does not have to be the same one

Think I have it.

Basically, you line up the highest percentile results for each team member from all the challenges they enter in a given week. Then you compare those percentile results against the opponent team's percentile results for the challenges they enter; i.e., highest to highest, 2nd highest to 2nd highest. 3rd highest to 3rd highest and so on. In each member match up, the higher percentiles result gets the 3 pts. If they tie somehow, its 1.5 pts. to each.

Then you total up the member points earned for each team, plus any participation bonus and the highest total wins.

Is that it?

And to be clear when I say you line up the highest percentile results for each member, I mean if one member enters all three challenges you are only going to line up each individual member's highest single result for that week against the other team member's highest single percentile result for that week.

You are kidding right?! That is most confusing, convoluted setup I've ever seen! Really - tell me you're kidding.

... and what's this about within 5% is a tie?

Okay, now I've reread it twice and understand it, but still ... for real?

Well dang... I hate I missed out on this.

Any openings left?

So... do team members get to vote? I'm not familiar with TPL and not being on a team - just an individual - has me concerned about others like me, who are trying to do well on our own. Just curious. Thanks for any clarification... :)
