This is a tough challenge. There is a lot of really good photography in this challenge and a good bit of superb photography too. "Is it art or is it a just good photograph?" is what I've been asking myself as I vote in this challenge. What makes a photograph "art" is a tough question to answer. There is a school of thought that views photography as an artform, and art is certainly in the eye of the beholder, but what really makes a photograph art? For example, when is a portrait a work of art and not just a portrait? Is a hazy closeup of a few brilliantly colored flowers art, or it it just a great photograph of a hazy closeup of a few brilliantly colored flowers? I imagine this may have been a discussion that's been had before, but considering the Art of 2012 challenge is going on at the moment, I thought it was a relevant discussion to have...

How do we determine if a photograph is a work of art, or is it just a case of "I know it when I see it"?

well, clearly my entry is not art! It started out as 4.000 and now stands at 3.666. Not art. Just a shitty pictur.

with anything "art" related here, it's all over the map. some people view what Gyabanand Samantha_T do as more digital art than photography, while others view what Posthumous, jmritz, bspurgeon and that group enter as digital art.

Many voters also want to see "pretty pictures" and not have to think on what "art" is, or isn't.
I personally expect my art score to finish in the 3's, but i don't care, i submitted what i consider to be art and that's all that matters to me.

Like all challenges are anyway, score will be in the eye of the beholder... And when you use "art" in the title people get all over the place in their perceptions and scores...

Canonshooter since you're new here, you may find it useful to dig up previous art & fine art challenges, as well as previous threads discussing the question you ask.

And this is where it get's interesting.... because a great wildlife shot is Art!!! is it not?! And can be lots of work I assume... Depends on who is clicking the voting numbers... But I assume an excellent, well planned, time consuming wildlife shot would get steamrolled by a blurry despairing shot of a bum, or a sad person smoking on a street corner because one is considered more "Artsy".

I can't recall any useful consensus was ever reached except for one - art is subjective. To see how perceptions of photographic art change over time visit this museum of photography online:

I didn't say nothin about consensus... I just want him to understand why the dead horse icon is bound to show up eventually.

I may be new to this site, but I'm not new to internet forums and discussions, so I am very familiar with the dead horse icon. I'm also savy enough to know that if a topic is one that I have no interest in, or I feel is overdone, I'm not going to bother with it or make an "oh no not this again" post.

I don't think it hurts to have this discussion from time to time. The more we can refine our view art, especially as it applies to photography, and the more fair and balanced we can be when voting in challenges that involve art.

You have a great point here....

However, the timing of this discussion is not that great, since challenge is still in voting.
This kind of discussions have tendencies to "educate" voters about how they should vote.

I hadn't considered that, and it's a good point Basta. Let's table this until after the voting for the Art of 2012 challenge is over.
