The results of the 'Valentine's Photo II' challenge have been recalculated, due to the disqualfication of the former 4th place image for adding text. Congrats to our new honourable mentions!

Bummer. Ratted out by a squirrel, no doubt.

Wow, yuck. Talk about sticking to the letter of the law. Someone please remind me why text is illegal in expert?

Bummer on the DQ.

Hmmm my guess is that it falls under this rule of Expert Editing 'You may not -add text or any legible characters to your entry or its border during editing. '

So if it is graphic like text tool where you are using a program to create the text it is not allowed. But if you photograph some printed text and then cut and paste that part of the photo into the composition you would be good, yes?

I remembered that text was allowed in the Postcards and Motivational Posters challenges but then looking at the extra rules it specifically states "You may add text to your entry using any font." So I guess if we wanted to do the same of adding text graphics in Expert Editing it would have to have that added rule.

Expert editing ruleset says:

You may not: add text or any legible characters to your entry or its border during editing. This includes copyright statements.

Yes I know it's illegal but why is it?

I've always wondered that myself.

yes it seems like a weird rule for expert.

The dumb thing is -- I spent a huge amount of time tracing the text.

Then my computer crashed.

When people started asking how I did the text, I looked and had this sinking feeling -- it looked a little too perfect. I had gotten pretty good at tracing, but I still had this awful feeling that since it was so late (read the photographer's notes) that I forgot to go back and trace it.

I opened the photoshop file to see if I could figure it out, but it was all merged, so there wasn't any proof in there.

It was tempting to say that I traced it, because I certainly spent a huge amount of time doing just that. But I simply told that SC that I couldn't remember, but I thought there was definitely a chance that it was the text tool, because it was looking too perfect. I've added text before -- but have always traced it. That's what happens when you're in a mad rush and your computer crashes. If only the stupid stores would have had the conversation hearts in the first place, I wouldn't have had to draw the stupid thing!! I blame the stores for the DQ!! Down with the stores!

:D

So you can handwrite text but you cannot use the text tool?

I don't think it matters. I just got DQed for adding text by hand (and it wasn't even "text" but only a single letter. However the rule goes a long way to specify that any "legible character" is not allowed).

Thanks for that explanation. I guess I am confused about what Wendy means by "traced it," and why that would be legal.

And now we have a whole challenge full of legible characters ;-).

not really, the image should speak for itself.

so wouldn't it be nice if there was consistency?

and by the way that's a recent fourth place...

The rule says "You may not add text to your entry or its border during editing. This includes copyright statements."

That example is a photo of text that is already written on paper - so not added during editing.

I could have sworn that I've drawn in letters previously -- that's what I meant by tracing them. Maybe I'm dreaming. But I'm assuming that drawing is art and text tool is text? (or maybe I've just always had it in the back of my mind that drawing is fine... )

SC?

I agree but in cases like this it seems wrong. How is this different than when gyaban creates part of his image by painting it on? Just because it is legible text. I can understand this rule for advanced, basic and minimal. But for expert I think the rule should just be that no watermarks or copyright marks with the persons name should be allowed.

ok look at wendy's image, there was no need to add text, she was creating a valentines day card.

The text serves no purpose in context other than to spell out or clarify the intent of the image, i can see why it isn't allowed.

now if she had a squirrel holing a pen writing "happy valentines day", well... that i think should be allowed. so long as the text is part of the image and not a title or saying slapped on there...

edit: crap i was looking at the wrong image... imagine how my work looks right now :)

anyway how is that illegal? its adding context to the image. this rule needs to be revisited.

SC?

I was thinking the same thing, and this is why added it by hand. When I got the proof request I went on to read the rule, and it bans text regardless of the method it was added. The only way around it (in expert) is to print the text and take a photo, which is much easier to do than what I did. I guess I can only blame myself for my stupidity, but I also think such a rule in expert makes little sense.
