Hey guys
My Canon 550d was stolen in November, and it looks like we're about to get the insurance money through. In total, I'm gonna get about £850 back from all camera related equipment stolen.
So... The massive question is... what do I buy?
I liked the little 550d... I really did. I tried a Nikon 100d & 200d that a friend kindly loaned me over xmas... but I really didn't like the feel or set-up. Maybe I have just become accustomed to the Canon.
So I'm defo going for Canon. But which one?
It turns out I can now get the 650d for the same price the 550d cost me a year ago. Or I've been looking at the 60d on the net. I even checked out the price of the 7d just to see if it was in the budget range.
It turns out I could get either of those 3... but would have to compromise on lenses etc the better camera I got.
Can anyone offer any advice as to the models... and recommendations?

| If you shoot lots of fast moving things often get a 7D, it has a far superior AF system, otherwise 60D is just as good for less. The AF isn't bad, it just isn't the 7D and is perfectly capable for most shooting styles. The two cameras have identical IQ, and as much as people knock the flip out screen as a gimmick it really is great, i miss it every time i do tripod work or shoot close to the ground. |

| Al, Looks like you don't have a lot invested in lenses so keep your option open. An Olympus OM-D EM5 might be worth a look. |

I have a Canon 40D I no longer need if you are happy to go a bit older.
We could come up with a deal if you pm me and I live local :)
Alternatively if you decide to change manufacturer I'd be happy to buy your 50mm and give my 40D a back up status.

This. I would jump at a 40d vs the rebel series. The controls are MUCH better laid out and accessible. DxO/reports be damned, a camera you can use readily is infinitely better, and I tested the 40D alongside my D300 and it's a good bit ahead of rebel series, period. You could also look at the 50D but the 60D was a bit of a letdown so far as build/capabilities go for the XXD series goes. I know you're used to higher res and all that, but I'm a firm believer in the controls and feel of a camera, and the rebels are toys while the XXd's are tools. |

FWIW, I had a long chat in a good photoshop the other day. My brother is thinking about getting the 60D. The guy in the shop said that he (brother) should hang on for a while, apparently Canon is launching a new model which will lie between the 60D and the ... 7(?)D, but will definitely be superior to the 60D. He (the guy in the shop) was guessing that the price of the 60D will then drop quite drastically.
For you it may be worth waiting to see if this is actually true. Unless of course you miss your photography so much that you don't want to wait :-).

the 7D is due to be replaced, but who knows what Canon will release. We should find out soon. However prices wont drop until the release happens and that may not be until fall.

I've just got the EM5 and i adore it. Beautiful little camera. Might just be out of Shifty's budget in the UK though. |

The rumor mill last summer was saying that the 70D was going to be out last December. Since then the rumor mill has been really quiet. The question is if the 7D mark II has jumped it for the next release window, or if it will be out in the spring, but the usually active rumor mill has been very quiet.
If it was me without a camera, I would grab a used 40D for around $300 and use it until what ever happens happens, then sell the 40D for $250 or so. Consider it a low cost rental. |
