This is a Tawny Frogmouth (often incorrectly referred to as an owl) is a nocturnal bird that is not too uncommon around my neck of the woods. However, I have never gotten a shot of one until last night. This fellow was sitting on our back gate and was patient enough to allow my wife to shine a mobile phone torch on it so I could get this shot before flying off into the night.

I know it’s not a great photo but I was excited by it for two reasons. Firstly, it’s not easy to shoot nocturnal birds at night. But most exciting for me was the chance to try my new camera in low light. I’m really impressed by its performance at iso 6400. My old 350D would never have been capable to get the shot (at least not in my hands).

I just wanted to share my happiness.

This is awesome! - I have never seen one except on TV.

And it is not a strange name for this little guy...especially if you have ever seen one open their mouth.

Nice shot for the conditions you were shooting in.

Very nice - I only have day-time photos of a tawny frogmouth.

That's an amazing little bird there. Wonderful capture in low light.
Tell me, what's the scale of this guy. Tiny, Middling, or Tall?

This bird was about 300mm (12in) including its tail so I would say Middling to Tall.

Great shot for the conditions Phil. I had one sitting on the verandah rail a few years ago but that was when I only had a p&s so I envy you your shot :)
