I've also gotten resonable results when I didn't have a grey card by aiming the light at a piece of white printer paper (without overexposing the white), or even a white t-shirt to get into the ballpark, then tweaking it later in Lightroom. Shoot in RAW, of course.
I don't know the exact temp, but I think most LED's are pretty blue. |

Thanks so much for the link, I look forward to exploring it fully and watching his tutorials. He certainly has some amazing images, lots of inspiration.

Thanks for the extra info. Went back to one of my camera magazines as I remembered seeing a grey card they supplied with that issue, so I will give it a go this week. |

Week 4 Secretary Bird

I know these pics are not good photographically, but I have put them anyway as this bird is becoming so rarely seen in the wild that all sightings are supposed to be reported to the Avian Demographic unit.
Just thought it might be of interest to some people.

Ok this one Im not really happy with, Dont like the shadows on the back wall, also it doesnt have as much depth to it as what it actually had. All the items had quite a bit of distance between them from front to back, more so than in my other images but it just doesnt come across that way. I tried to light behind the objects to specifically get this feel, but doesnt seem to have worked. Probably should have adjusted angle slightly higher maybe. I really wanted to use a white background to have a go at the WB issue again. (forgot to shoot in RAW though! Aargh) But this is an excercise in experimenting and learning. |

Not sure of the name of the plant, I believe it is some sort of Easter Cactus. The buds are just starting to form.

I have had the flu, or maybe the Norovirus, or maybe food poisoning. So I'm lagging behind on my commenting. I will catch up. Feeling better now.

I'm getting behind - I have been away from home for the last week. I did catch up with commenting - here's my entry for week 4.
4/52:
For week 3 the best I did was my entry in the Arts challenge which did just about average (which I understand given the limited photographically artistic content), but I was quite pleased with the way the horse was lit, although some of teh shadows are still a tad too dark.
3/52:
And, as a general remark, I really appreciate all the comments I have received so far and hope you are experiencing the same. I sure am glad I joint this side challenge! |

This series may get long-winded if they are all as interesting as this one is.
On Bryant Street, after that BB&B study of a week or so ago, I did catch a glimpse of this 'turret' that seemed a candidate for my Oddities. I also had a glimpse of the rather interesting structure to which it belonged. The picture I grabbed then was not adequate, so I went back today on a nice quiet Sunday to try again. And found a parking spot! In the midst of very industrial and chaotic Bryant Street was the gem pictured in my notes.
You must understand that this section of Bryant Street is very near the Hall of Justice with its many competing signs and storefronts for Bail Bond emporiums and the like. This little gem really stood out.
Some links that give something of the history of 772 Bryant are here and here. It and its neighbor contain, of all things, photography studios.
I'll answer Neil here as it's a question that might come up again - turns out, it is a skylight over a 3rd floor conference room & is pictured in one of the links.
