Look on eBay for T2 T mount for Nikon. Some are less than $10. Most telescopes use the T mount system, but ask your neighbor to let you know what's needed, or show him what you intend to buy, before buying anything.
Getting good clear photos with a telescope is not as easy as you might think, but it's very rewarding when you do get a good one.
Saturn is slipping below the nighttime horizon soon, and will not be back until next summer. It's good that you got to see it.

Heads-up for TWO eclipses coming up in the next few weeks -- a total lunar eclipse on 10/8 and a partial solar eclipse on 10/23 (as viewed from North America). East coast observers will have a unique opportunity if clear views of both East and West horizons are available, as the end of totality occurs just at sunrise there -- a 180° panorama should show both the eclipsed Moon and rising Sun ... listen to the podcast for more detail.

Bump -- the Full Moon is risen on the West Coast -- Lunar eclipse should be starting pretty soon ... |

Are you sure that's not when it reaches totality? Anyway, I think that's still "pretty soon" in astronomical terms ... :-) |

Perfect set up, but cirrus clouds muddy-ing the view. I can still see the lunar eclipse, but it's not a photo opportunity. |

Everything is clear here, except one cloud over the moon. Can still see the eclipse, but its making g it bright around it. |

Sigh* didn't see totality. Covered by clouds. Saw partial about 20 minutes earlier, but didn't photograph it since I was going out in a bit. |

Lunar Eclipse was AWESOME!!! I was so happy, had the settings up and going under 5 minutes without guessing on even what the settings should be on!
I think I am learning something, finally.. Was very happy with the results just wish I had a telephoto lens 500-1000 to get even closer to the moon..
But I used my 70-300 was pretty satisfied with the results. One of the first time clear skies with stars, one of the most beautiful nights ever.. |

I got up and watched for a bit, but didn't get the camera out. Saw a lot of nice shots in my Facebook feed this morning! |

If you got the taste but the weather didn't cooperate the good news is it isn't ever too terribly long to the next one. :) |

Got up went outside, it was already too low at 6:25 in my valley to see anything but a slight glow... Went back to bed |

What we saw here was very similar to what vawendy reported. It was overcast but you could see the crescent and disc but no surface features. It soon went behind heavier clouds and that was it. It was interesting to see, but not a photo op. |

I'm back from the dead. I had a good shoot for Wednesday morning's lunar eclipse. Time lapse composite:

Very nicely done! Looks like there was some haze near the horizon -- around here the fog/haze are always ruining my attempts at moonset shots. Good to see someone else (still) using pBase! |

@General - too lazy to switch from PBase to someone else, and wouldn't know where to go if I wanted to.

I think pBase is great -- I've been back to using it again recently myself.
More on the partial solar exclipse 10/23/14 -- includes instruction for viewing by making your fingers into a pinhole camera ... |

The solar eclipse was a bust here. Clouds ate it up before the moon did. |

Animation of most of the first half-plus of the recent eclipse -- more details in the notes section. |
