Earlier today I noticed there was a few specks of dirt/dust appearing when looking through the viewfinder of my 5D. So I took the lens off and while looking into the viewfinder I saw that there were several scratches across the focusing screen which is not visible when a lens is attached.

That being said I'm fairly certain that these scratches will not affect the image quality so I'm not in a rush to replace it right now. Although, I am just curious to know if Canon has stopped production on the Canon Eg-D Precision Matte Focusing Screen with Grid? If it's like the VF Grid Display on the 7D this would be something nice to have around.

the focussing screen does not effect image quality as it not inline of the sensor....

you can get different screens for the 5d mk2

//www.learn.usa.canon.com/app/pdfs/quickguides/CDLC_FocusingScreens_QuickGuide.pdf

etc etc

Thanks for that PDF. I was curious about the installation and it seems simple enough to do.

Yeah, I've been looking at that EG-D Focusing Screen in particular, but it's pretty much out of stock everywhere, including directly from Canon's store. Hopefully BH will get some in stock early next year.

I have them in both my 5D and my 5D2. Installation is a snap. I have a hard time living without a grid in the viewfinder.

Are the grids difficult to make out in low light situations?

Depends what you mean by "low light": at night, sure they are. In dim lighting situations I can see the grid fine, though.

Awesome. Looks like I'll be picking this one up instead of the stock replacement. Thanks.
