Post em up!

Today didn't go as planned so I need to cheat and start with an outtake from the high contrast challenge:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/69325/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1042158.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/69325/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1042158.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

You can actually see the lighting set up in this one, a soft box to my left and the other on the b/g

Well, nothing yet really so thought I'd at least post what I'll be using as the portrait studio (I'll edit this later to post what I'd use for product type shots.)
A bed sheet hung over a closet. The lamp would be off and my speedlight would be dangling from it.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/95000-99999/96574/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1043476.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/95000-99999/96574/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1043476.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

One of the things I like about side challenges is I'll do some stuff with lighting and processing that I might not normally do in a challenge. Also, instead of posting a picture of my studio area I thought I would post a video tour if you feel like watching it.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/69325/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1043623.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/65000-69999/69325/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1043623.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I'll be posting the light set up in a minute

My first shot will be of my studio too but I will have to clean it up first :(

I had a huge stack of crap there that I moved to the other side of the room. If I took a shot behind me, you'd see a big pile of junks...hehe.

Figured I had better get something up. This was taken at a dance studio using two speedlites and 43" shoot through umbrellas. One at camera right in front and the other camera left at the back.

My goal for the last few weeks and for the foreseeable future is to learn to use flash and other lights, both in studio and in nature. But, tonight, out of desperation for not getting to things (real life job and other things keep intruding), I decided to go back to something I sorta know how to do in my tabletop studio space. I used my D7000 Nikon with the Sigma 150 f/2.8 macro, and a small Metz flash, on tripod. The setup is a Pirex pan with water in it, a sorta shade around it to keep overhead light from reflecting on the water, and a bunch of reflective materials behind and to the back of the water.

This is a photo of the setup:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/5112/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044022.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/5112/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044022.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Here are two of the resulting images, the first one is cropped to a 5x7, the second is uncropped:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/5112/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044020.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/5112/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044020.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/5112/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044021.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/5000-9999/5112/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044021.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

What I really want to figure out is how to make pictures of people!

Anyway.

Hope you don't mind if I crash the party a little. I forgot to signup but I thought I would share the setup for my umbrella entry.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1666/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1042697.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1666/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1042697.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Setup:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/125000-129999/128201/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044026.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/125000-129999/128201/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044026.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Background, base, and both sides are white foam board. (reflections suck with glassware!)

Background lit with a Vivitar 285 with a red gel on it. It was set to 1/16 power but was still too strong, so I added a one stop ND filter on it.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/125000-129999/128201/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044027.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/125000-129999/128201/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044027.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

The background gradient was created with a 580 EXII (no gel) with a grid attached. Set to 1/128 power.
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/125000-129999/128201/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044028.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/125000-129999/128201/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1044028.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Umbrella was lit from above with an SB-26 set to 1/32 power.

Martini glass contained water with a drop of food coloring. I added the water with a funnel to make sure water drips didn't show up above the water line.

I took about 100 shots before I found the configuration I liked best.

well, guess i could post this one since the studio shot i put up was taken while doing this entry.
the ceiling lamp is off, and you can't see it, but my speedlight (set at 1/32) is hanging from it. there is also a small led headlamp on the floor shining up at my face.

Sorry! My little model has pneumonia so I haven't been able to work on anything. Not sure when I'll be able to join in.

Trying, trying, but real life has a way of taking over. Real life is not reality, reality is what you imagine and think and make (I keep telling myself THAT in real life :)

This was actually shot last Summer and not in a studio. Just wanted to show you can do these shots outside as well. This was done in a parking lot with a large reflector behind the model and tone alien bee in an octabox.

Sorry, a lot of scowls and blank stares in this set, this was not a good night and so I went to the studio for some light therapy.

And if someone can tell me how to build the diagrams like I see with Art's photos I will post them.

Thanks made one for the family session. And as soon as I can get some proofs up for this client I will put up some more and make more diagrams.
