It's not a matter of big or small newspapers, but of a believable image for a newspaper, whatever it is.

The front cover image on today's copy of our daily newspaper(subscription of more than 30,000) is a black and white image of a lighthouse....

Open your minds folks....

same here. there are sooooo many meaningless stories in newspapers nowadays.
and from what I read, the description doesn't say it has to be WORLDLY news or something that would be a MAJOR EVENT.

I remember once seeing a newspaper headline about someone who walked in a particular park. everyday, this Guy would take a walk in the park, the same park. it wad just something he did. can't remember the headline though... something like "the man who walked"?
it was one of the most boring things I had ever seen.

Not exactly a fair example, bassbone. You're in New England. It was either a lighthouse or a lobster, and we all know lobsters typically run front page Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Not quite right...lobsters are not on Tuesdays and Thursdays in months ending in "R"

Months don't end in "r"; they end in "ah." It's Novembah!

I see bohemka is adapting well to his new life in New England ... Thanks for the laugh Scott, and Peter too!

I will, they're terrible.
At first I thought this would be FS city, instead most people just tried to submit anything. I guess since the advent of the internet, iPads, other tablets, and cell phones, it's somewhat understandable that most people don't even know what a newspaper is anymore, let alone what most photographs look like in them.

Was it supposed to look like a newspaper photo though (halftone etc.) or just a b&w photo that might end up in a newspaper?

I just know it said "It must be black and white (and the grays in between)"......

I was surprised that even though in the description it says "It must be black and white (and the grays in between)", some of the photos are not really black and white, but oh well.

During the voting period, you are out-of-line to discuss groups of images in a challenge. I will welcome your comments before a challenge begins, or after the voting period has concluded. (Oh, yeah. LOL!!!!)

if i submitted what i was GOING to (and decided to put into the monthly FS) i'm sure my score would be much higher, instead i'm sitting at 4.86 with an image that's nearly identical to the one that ran in the paper the day after i took my image. So a joking "screw you, obviously i'm right (as always)" to people who low vote me :)

I think what is going on is that people have entered according to what actually appears in newspapers. Many actual newpaper images are snapshotty and not creative photography in any way.

DPC voting, however, is based on wow-factor and personal appeal. So the challenge topic and normal voting styles are at odds with each other.

Voting should be based on the challenge. Screw "oooh, that's pretty but has nothing to do with what we're supposed to be shooting".

not seeing her "out-of-line" comment there.
the description does say "MUST" not "can". therefore, she's not saying anything bad about any image... she's simply pointing out the obvious... the RULE.
that shouldn't cast bias, and if it does, people are idiots.

Oh really? So a group of pictures that are DNMC shouldn't be discussed either. Basically nothing should be discussed. Even this thread shouldn't exist because people are discussing scores for the entries that are currently in voting.
Sad how frustrated and negative some people seem to be... And I'm happy you are enjoying the use of "lol" that you learned recently :)

Thanks Denielle! Yes, just quoting the challenge description/rules.

Neil offered the following opinion in a previous scores thread. Post #54

Per the rules, do not post outtakes during the challenge voting period (I've removed the offending post and reply). After the challenge ends is fine.

Also, while perhaps a gray area, I think better not to call out a subgroup of the images during the voting period. It would make a great discussion afterwards though.

Save your comments about specific images or groups of images until after the voting ends. Otherwise, it appears you are trying to sway votes for some reason. If you have a complaint about this, you should address your gripe to Neil and the SC.

So he said "better not to call out" not "definitely can't call out". Anyway I edited my message where only the challenge rule is stated - that pictures must be black and white with grays.
And please don't tell me what to do if you could. If you have a problem just report it.

I see you have a habit. Post #7

I certainly am not telling you what to do. Sometimes, the damage is done before the stretched-too-thin SC can respond to improper forum behavior. BTW, I'm not frustrated, nor negative.

so people shouldn't abide by challenge rules, but we have to abide by forum rules?
doesn't make much sense to me.
restating challenge rules doesn't seem to "sway voters" IMO. if it does, they shouldn't be voting in the first place, because clearly they didn't READ challenge rules to begin with.

"Save your comments[...]" is telling me what to do.
Oh yeah, I have a habit? That I really wanted to vote in a challenge I didn't participate in but couldn't find the original pictures to compare? Used a random word in search but didn't state any opinions about any pictures.
I see you have a habit of complaining, like in previous scores threads. If you feel like it just open a whole new thread where you can do that since this one is about the scores.
Btw. I never directly said you are frustrated or negative :)

The forum (voting) rules are there for a good reason.
