I was checking some of my original images I had and was looking at the .exif data via Photoshop File Info. I just wanted to ask a probrably pretty simple questions what is the best way to ensure you don't modify anything when your want to keep your original files? I am using Lightroom 4.2 and I have Photoshop CS6 as well but I generally Import photos in Lightroom or in Adobe Bridge. I just don't want to be doing things wrong and changing original files. Any guidance would greatly be appreciated. |

My process is entirely different than everyone else. I often get told I do things most others don't do. With that said, I'm very particular about the "original file", not for DPC reasons mind you, just because I am.
I transfer all files from the card to the drives using Beyond Compare. Its a good utility to verify that contents match via a direct binary comparison (slow) or md5 hash (faster). Then, I put a read only tag on the files.
Of course, that screws certain operations that write key words and other meta data to the files. I'm still trying to figure this out. I don't have LR4 yet (because I'm on Win XP) so I haven't worked that process out. |

I transfer the originals by putting the memory card in a card reader, and using the operating system to copy the files. For the files I am going to edit, I place a copy in a subdirectory so there is always an untouched original.

Thats what I have been doing for years and never had any problems before. Today I was checking a file I copied that way and it had a create date when I copied it and had no info of when the shot was actually taken. Maybe I did something wrong in the process I normally do and botched something up. |
