so my local camera shop has a nice example of both second hand, 12 month warranties etc

at the mo I'm leaning towards the 24-105 as a good carry around lens but i love my current 28-70L but ive rebuilt it and sometimes i feel its not as sharp in the corners, well i know its not especially stopped down, not sure id sell my 28-70 either might get £300 for it but i ve had it 6 years or more and shes been very good to me hrhr

24-105 is £600

24-70 is £850

Had both - sold the 24-70 since it didn't get used. Still have the 24-105. More bang for the buck and very versatile. Perfect walk-around lens.

24-105 is my best lens. I struggled with this same decision and versatility/reach won. I still wanted a nice 2.8, so I got the 17-55 which is my second most used lens.

I guess I was slightly different having the 28-70L already which is a great lens so I got the 24-105 a bw skylight and a lowepro classified 250 aw bag all for £575 a steal :)

The age old question... 24-70 or 24-105... religious wars have been fought on less then this :-)

I started with a tammy 28-75 f2.8 (granted not the one your after but similar so mention it) and swapped recently to the 24-105f4.... I would not go back and love the 24-105..... BUT I found myself wanting more length on the tammy and I was rarely near 2.8 because I have primes that I tend to use when I need a faster lens. It comes down to personal preference which is why people ...er... strongly defend their own choice :-)

You could try renting one BUT to be honest that tends to be expensive and with the lack of loss on selling L's it might be better to make your best call and try it for a few month and swap if not happy.

I have both the Canon 24/70 f2.8 and the Canon 24/105 f2.4 and have to admit that I use the latter much more often. Depending on what it is I want to do, I have been know to tote the 24/70 f2.8 mounted to one camera and the 70/200 f2.8 on another.

If they ever come out with a 24/105 f2.8 I can assure you that I will get that.

If it was my choice, I would go with the 24/105 as I consider it the best walk around lens I have and it is very versatile.

For travelling, 24-105mm only because it is versatile, however the image quality of 24-70mm is superior to 24-105mm, especially in the corners. I basically only use the 24-105mm if I have no other choice. Good lens, but I cannot consider it a great lens. I never use it for studio.

As mentioned above I bought the 24-105, I'll wait to upgrade my 28-70L

Got a great deal lens was £600, lowepro classified 250 was £50 and a bw 77mm skylight was £50 got all 3 for £575 :) I've been loyal to them and spent lots so it's good to be treated well

They had the 50mm L in second hand for £1000 but I've got the sigma 50mm 1.4 and I doubt if there's £700 difference but I was tempted

If work continues as it is I'll be getting the 24-70 as well keep my 28-70L as backup.

I had a play with the eos m while in the shop was nice little camera but not a fan of all touch screen and no dials, we did have a laugh and mount a 400mm 2.8 L on to it hehe, what a beautiful lens but £6600 second hand

Bit of advice, as a fellow owner of the Classified 250 AW....

The clips that hold the strap on are garbage. Total garbage. Mine separated and caused the whole bag to drop. My luck was that it was a scant few inches off the ground. I replaced the POS part that joins the clip on the strap itself to the bag with a spare climbing carabiner I had hanging around, but you could use various other offerings. The clips themselves on the strap are so-so as well, but the part that joins them to the bag is the worst and I caution you about their strength.

ETA: If my description of which part I mean isn't clear I can post a pic to show you what will fail. I wasn't too heartbroken as I got mine very cheap as well, but I'd be super angry if I had paid MSRP.

As the body generations have improved noise by roughly 1 stop each, the 24-105 looks better and better compared to the 24-70. In eseense it is now as fast as the 24-70 was 5 years ago (meaning you can crank the ISO one stop to get that missed aperture of 2.8 to 4.0). I know this isn't an exact duplicate (you miss out on some shallow DOF etc), but I've always loved my 24-105. I have a 24-70 at work and never think to use it.

I guess I'm the odd man out here. I bought the 24-70 before the 24-105 existed, so I didn't really have a choice in that range. Nonetheless, if I at some point choose to replace the 24-70, it will be with the updated 24-70. There is no substitute for f/2.8; it will always be a stop faster than an f/4 lens, and offer better control of DoF. It also has less distortion at the 24mm end. True, it does not have IS, but IS on this focal length lens is only really useful for static scenes, not people, and if I'm shooting static scenes, most of the time I am using a tripod.

Ken Rockwell prefers the 28-135 IS.

Ken: "I found the 24-105mm f/4 L a pain to zoom precisely at the wide end."

What the..? Because we've all been there when the shot has been ruined because we were at 27mm instead of 26mm...

Bah, Canon...that's one of the reasons why I have yet to defect. Far too many lenses with so little significant difference between them, in addition to lots of heft in terms of weight and price. That's why, although I can shoot Canon comfrotably, shoot Nikon.

Yeah because more choice is a bad thing...... Oh the jealous nikonites hehe ;)

That D ring. It's not solid at all and is just sorta press-fit together. The clips on the strap aren't top notch either but it's that D ring that failed in short order for me. I think it's because the ring has a tendency to sorta rotate so the forces begin to pull the thing apart.

I used it for quite a long time. Was very happy with it. Acceptably sharp , has IS, and a huge range. Gave it to my daughter when I got the 24-105. I like this lens compared to the much heavier f2.8. It remains my walk around lens for everything except for my birding.
