I'm at 4.8947. I don't think my entry is spectacular, but I was hoping to at least get in the 5s. It is frustrating when people don't tell you why they vote low. I can take it if it means I learn something and can improve!

I appreciate the two very good comments. This score is now lower than my entry in Princess Bride challenge. That's really ridiculous based on the relative caliber of the images. There's something wrong with the voting in this Reflections challenge. I ask that those who are voting DNMC-like low votes on images which clearly meet the challenge explain themselves in comments on the images. If my image is DNMC, I'd like to know.

Take deep breaths and forget about it... whilst everyone puts effort into the submissions, it ain't that important to get so wound up over.

Thats my opinion anyway!

Let me know how your first challenge entry fares. Most of the time, I do not put much effort into challenge entries. Not enough time in my life to dedicate much energy towards trying to score well here, especially when the images are restricted to 800 pixels. But, once in a while, I will put in time and energy to capture a first rate image. This reflections challenge represents a significant cost of acquisition. My entry meets the challenge. There have been a batch of really low votes. I understand that not everyone will like my photos. But, sometimes, there seem to be some voting irregularities. I've been around a while and I've observed quite a few challenges. This one has shown the biggest drop in score for me ever. I'll forget about it, but I would like to hear from those who are casting low votes... as to why.

Fair enough - I hope other people do give you feedback over the low (or high of course) scores as I can sympathise with how frustrating it may be. I'm about to submit one for a challenge that I've put loads of thought and effort into, and I'll be gutted if it turns out with rubbish scores.

In the meantime however, my very first challenge/submission....

I'll settle for a 5+ score for a first attempt!

How do you have that many votes, and I only have 58? Ha! Do people not vote on every image?

Wow, that kind of voting discrepancy is astounding.
Are you sure you're looking at the reflection challenge? I know it's a stupid question, but that difference is kind of large.

I can show mathematically this kind of selective voting is detrimental in relation to consistent scoring. Maybe I'll start another thread so as to not derail this one depending on the answer to the question above from lily and cristina.

edit - Shifty might be referring to his score in secret self portrait or Princess Bride based on his comment.

I think he was referring to the score on his first entry, as brought up by Richard Hahn.

I seriously doubt it's the score for his reflections entry.

I realized that and posted the edit. Otherwise that discrepancy is out of whack and worthy of discussion.

Probably Princess Bride challenge. Those numbers would match up with other entries.

Not sure it makes any difference... but I submitted my image fairly early...

One thing I'm still miffed by though is how many seemed to entirely miss the fact that refractions are not reflections!

You'd think after all of the previous discussion on this, and the easy availability of definitions/examples on the internet (which, by necessity, all DPC'ers have access to), that people really would take the two seconds to shoot the right thing.

Here's a good example, the lower and brighter beam is refraction, the upper right and dimmer beam is reflection.
If it goes through the substance, it's refraction, if it bounces off, then it's reflection. This is basic stuff, and I really do expect everyone to know this, or to at least look it up.

Just as a fun geeky aside, note that the angle of the reflection is equal to the angle of the incoming source, but the angle of the refraction is significantly different. That's RI, and we rely upon it strongly in gemology and a ton of other fields, including the lenses used in photography! :)

But you could affect the voting.
As has been shown time and time again here, meeting the challenge is somewhat irrelevant.

Gee, that'd be a shame. I'd hate to cause people to actually understand something. ;)

I'm confused! So was that for the princess bride challenge or the reflections challenge? As for submitting early, it doesn't matter if you're the first entry or the last. They all go to voting at the same time.

irrelevance is beside the point

Still nothing to write home about but creeping up incrementally. Waiting for the art lovers to come out and vote - or something LOL What I'd really like is some more comments . . . I'm working on my own. I'm at 16% and will try to get to at least 25% this morning.

Thanks for the comment you just left me, Nikki. I need to make another pass through to lay down some more comments. Happy with my score, comments and favorite.
