Took these pictures with my new CS filter. Looking for ideas to improve. I got a lot of junk pictures that night from having aperture at 2.8. These were at F7 with a 16sec shutter. Any other hints or ideas to improve with the CS, or night photography in gereral? Thanks.

A CS filter? What filter is that? Anyway, I really like the second picture and the first picture is good too. I know this location well (I've been to nine brewfests there ;) ), I thought I recognized Steel Bridge. I have several photos of it myself but not at night. I might have cropped a little bit tighter on the bridge pic because there is not as much interest on the right side and top of the photo. In the first pic it doesn't appear level and it could use a primary area of interest. My eyes tend to wander around without settling on any one thing in particular. Overall it is still a nice photo but just lacks some of the impact of the second one. Nice job, Portland is a beautiful city.

I have a 6X Cross Star filter. These are the first night shots I've done, and all I've done in PS is curves and resize. Thanks for the reply. I mainly want to improve on my night shots, because I want to get up to Seattle, and get some shots of the Space Needle. Want to get a better idea of what to do, before taking the 3.5 hour drive.

I've got a question on the star filters that I've always wondered about. Why do some camera's need a filter for this effect and others don't? All my night shots have the star effect without any filters.

Example without filter:

When the lens is stopped down, highlights take the shape of the aperature blades. The larger number of blades, the more star-bursts you will have. I prefer a lens with an odd number of blades which makes the effect look more "natural".

On cheap digicams with smaller lenses, I believe the aperature blades do not contract enough to create a very pronounced effect when stopped down all the way.
