Here's my theory about trying to change voters ways of voting: the vast majority of voters don't participate in the forums, so your advice, suggestions, admonition, etc is lost on them. Those that do participate in these discussions have already been voting enough to do it the way they like to and/or resent being told how to vote.

I just don't get why it gets rehashed over and over. I'll always be the guy that defends the people who don't vote according to klkitchens methods because, and I'll say it again, IT DOESN'T MATTER. That's right, bold, italicized and with caps lock on. So suck it up buttercup because all methods are equally valid. Learn to accept that and life will be much more enjoyable.

Come on now, Art is not subjective. There are strict guidelines that all must follow when rating other photos. How dare any of you vote am 9-10 on something I hate and is clearly not correct. We are all the same, all the photos are the same and we must all vote the same.

You've misunderstood the discussion.

Of course Art (and art) is subjective. It's the scale used here that is the problem. If the site were more clear beyond 1 = BAD, 10 = GOOD so that people can put "meh" whereever on that line they choose it would be a great help.

Yes, I may rate yours EXCELLENT and someone else rates it FAIR -- that's the subjective part. But if all EXCELLENTS were 9s and all FAIRS were 5, we'd be a lot better off.

I don't see where this is an issue. If my average vote given in a challenge is a 7 and someone else is a 4 as long as we are both consistent with our scoring it all averages out in the end. If we were the only two people who voted and assuming we agreed on placements but the score given was 4 points different the placements would still end up the same. The scores would be averaged between our votes but the end would be the same. I think it would be more prudent to vote 100% so that each entry has been evaluated equally instead of "revising" the scale.

Oh, sure, the DPC pros will tell me that if I just comment a bit more, I'll pick up on how to get high scoring photographs here (I'm working on that, the commenting part) but that really won't help me much. What I want to know is how to score well with BORING photographs. Snapshots. That sort of thing.

Just wait and itll happen eventually if you dont change a thing :)

LOL! Been here since 2004. I think I've waited long enough. :-)

Yeah... You've never had any good images, have you? ;)

And a 5.9 for this extremely boring photograph is pretty good too. :D

Use a very sharp and shiny drill bit?

I do so hate that doll.

Well, then there's a hell of an idea for a photographic series.

Torture the hated Middleton doll to death. Slowly, painfully, graphically.

You could think of it as a "Snuff" series. ;)

This is a good start in fact....

Its the processing. Actually, the processing really draws out color, texture, and depth to the photograph. All of which are key elements in photography.

I am sorry to be a jerk, but how on earth can this get a 6+ score? Can someone tell me, why they score it that high? It's just... I don't understand.

I could pick many other pictures, this only serves as an example.

Ha! Not my doll and I don't think the owner would appreciate it being tortured. And it is a couple of thousand miles away. But a good idea!

The extremely boring photograph of the bike is my phone wallpaper. Apparently either I like it or I'm too lazy to change my wallpaper to something more exciting.

By the way, my own personal favorite picture of the year is even more boring. I will eventually get this printed on canvas when the next good Groupon comes along...

This is the highest scoring boring photo I could find:

The voters really had lost there sanity on that one.

Exactly!

Then we'd have one level of subjectivity instead of two.

Much more balanced.""""

i donno how to quote properly yet so this'll have to do.

Ok I get your pov, i may even agree that itd give a more clearcut answer on what people really think of your work, but signing up I knew that's how this site operates 0.o so i m fine with it.

edit: lol i found that quote icon

Boring? Again, that is a matter of perspective. I liked it a lot. But then I could be expected to, considering my own entry. Scored in the same neighborhood, as well.

I have found boring shots generally do well anything to do with drills or drill bits.

Heh.. It worked. I was so baiting you Spiffy. :)

ETA: I like your shot much better, but only because I like crusty old buildings.

I think it's obvious why this was neither boring, nor low scoring. :P :P

In your opinion. This is the part you seem to fail to comprehend, not every adheres to this, and they don't have to.

Not opinion (except for the better off part), but fact.

If you rate it excellent or poor, that's your call... but the site would then translate that to a "score" for averaging.

You still get to rate the photo as you see fit.
