Just letting you all know that I got hacked tonight...DO NOT OPEN ANY E-MAILS FROM ME FROM AOL.

I have NO idea what they would do...

I've cked my computer spyware...changed all passwords (made them complicated as I can...great now I'll be locked out)

I got nothing from you either, Janine. I guess the hackers don't like me so much! :P

Well, Marko...this is definitely one of those times that you DON'T want to hear from me...

Steve said it came from my AOL account for sure...closed as of now!!!

That happened to me a few months ago. AWFUL!

Got a TOS from AOL stating they would shut my account down if it happened again!

Some free advice--you should create a strong password, & change it at least twice a year. The answer to your security question can be anything you want & should be created with the same care as your password. It's a good idea to have two email accounts, from different providers, neither one your ISP. The email ID from your ISP provides access to your internet account/services & IMO it's a good idea to use it for that purpose only & be thoughtful about security with it, too. It's easier to take thoughtful precautions now than it is to recover from being hacked, later.

I do internet tech support for a living. I've noticed an increase in calls from people who've suffered email identity theft. Sometimes the hacker has also caused all email to be forwarded to a different account, & the original complaint is not "I've been hacked!" but "Why am I not getting any email?" Their first thought is that service isn't working.

I hope you recover your email OK & that it doesn't happen again Janine!

Thanks Annie...I have multiple e-mail accounts, lucky for me I had basically stopped using AOL for my personal stuff and cleaned out the address' (or so I had thought) so now I use it for things that I have to sign up for but don't want to receive on a huge volume in my personal e-mail (like groupon...I'm interested but I don't need e-mails daily)...if I don't get anymore e-mails in that account it's fine...I didn't necessarily "close" it offically but I didn't go and change the password...I say let it die. So I guess if he/she had to pick an account AOL was the better one...

I have several different passwords...BUT we haven't ever been of the habit to change the passwords a couple times a year...time to develop new habits right...

Thank you for the advice...

Just remember that length of password is more important than those old school imposible to remember Unix passwords.

MexicanBarkingSpider_2012 is much better than J.Wa|k3r.

I get quite a few emails from AOL contacts that show up in my junk folder. They never have a subject, and they only contain a link in the message. I tell my friends when it happens, and in some cases, they had to cancel that email ID to clear up the problem. The problem emails all come from AOL. Weird. I never click the link, which is different in each email.

I worked for IBM, and Prodigy was my first online account.

it was soooo funny because last night they asked me one of my security questions to validate that it was me...

question was: Which school did you attend. Which was way to vague for us...so we BOTH went through our lists of schools (mine was 4 my husbands many more as he moved around the state quite a bit in his youth) NON of our schools matched...

then the gal proceeded to tell us to get the last 4 digits from our CC that was registered to our account... blimey we opened this account probably 25+ years ago when we did pay a monthly fee but that's been gone forever...she said I could look it up on my banking records...pfffftttt 25+ years ago...ya right...

then she tried via the internet to get a computer validation (as to which computer I had)...and of course non of our current computers matched/were registered therefore we were up a creek with no paddle...it just goes to show that you should go through the exercise to "update" computer related things like e-mail accounts to keep them current. Lesson learned

I used to collect AOL CDs back when they were everywhere. Years later I put them on eBay and some sucker actually bought them.

Your computer was hacked, or just your AOL email?

How do you know? Are there messages in the "Sent" box you didn't send?

(I'm asking because it's possible to "think" you got hacked but really got spoofed instead, meaning, they are using your return address but they are not actually in your email system).

I've still got several boxes of these, of various vintages.... Along with a reasonable stock of cue-cats... How much did you get anyway? ;)

I also started out with Prodigy before switching to AOL.
Those, along with Usenet were among my first introductions to on-line communication.
