'This picture was taken this afternoon while strolling around the lake. I have never seen this species around this area before, which does not mean its not common here. My youngest daughter and I are curious as to what species this is. All help would be appreciated.

It's a juvenile night heron.

That's my thought. A juvenile yellow crowned night heron.

Agree as well. I see them all the time when I'm hiking. Proportions seem right for heron. Had one fly right through the woods once near a stream....couldn't get my camera fast enough....of course, I was balancing on a rock and tree limb at the time.

Wait until you see them in flight. I see them all around where I am. Sure, there are the ducks, the Canada geese (they are nasty and hiss at you), but when one of these birds takes flight there is something so well orchestrated and regal about it.

Later tonight, I'll post some I took at a far distance.

To us maybe... I would wager that frogs, small fish and baby frogs don`t think so. I have seen these fellas in action, they are akin to a flying garburator.

I don't like night herons (we have black crowned night herons in the area) and won't even shoot them. I'll shoot great blues and I love shooting greens, but there's just something very unpleasant about the night heron's demeanor that I find very creepy. Must be that blood-red eye.

Maybe someone here will know what species this fledgling is. I thought it might be a Cardinal but I don't think it is.
