Hello, I joined the site last night and look forward to some critiques on my photos. Gonna grow thick skin and learn from you fine folks.

Hi and welcome. Be reckless when submitting images but dare to be in the forums (especially when Art Roflmao hangs around.

If you joined last night, know up front that getting a 6 or higher as your final score is doing WELL here. if you're in the mid 5's you're average, and if you're below that, you're going to have to figure out if you're mostly looking to take pictures that will do well here and ribbon, or be happy with the pictures that you submit knowing that you are improving your skills and enjoy what you create.
Learning what ribbons here is one thing, duplicating it is another.
Going for artistic images will garner affection from some certain people and going for shots of your kids will generally not do as well as you'd like if you want to ribbon (unless they're exceptional images).
Also, images used for submission to a challenge MUST be taken by you within the 1 week period that the challenge is open for submissions, many new folks miss that one in the rules; and pay attention to the editing rules. Lots of DQs for people not paying attention there either.

Aside from that, looking forward to seeing what you have to offer and hope you enjoy your stay here. :)

Thanks to all of you for your replies, I do shoot for microstock, but look forward to learning to create photos that have a semblance of art and composition to them. Looking through past ribbon winners, I think i found the place.

Thick skin is good.

ummmm... Thick skin is necessary.

ummmm.... Thick skin plus Kevlar body suit is highly recommended. :)

You used to get a fruit basket when joining... Now you just get beaten up in the voting.

Oh wait, you always get beaten up in the voting...

Well, you used to get a fruit basket along with the beating...

Seriously though -- jump right in! Enter a challenge. Realize that even if it's the best picture in the world, you'll still probably get a couple of 1s, 2s, or 3s, or all of the above. People have different tastes and different voting methods, but it all comes out in the wash.

This is a good read: Unofficial beginners guide to DPC

Welcome to DPC, Reckless. I have to ask - is that your real name or just the way your parents refer to the night you were conceived?

I jest. Don't take anything here seriously. Seriously. Have fun!

And it might have tasted better if there was fruit in it. Ahhh, signs of the times. :/

LOL!

Reckless, meet Art and Spiffy. At some point, a fellow named Slippy might impinge himself upon your consciousness as well, if that does happen, talk to your doctor, there are a few new medications that can help lessen the traumatic after effects of these encounters.

..

Welcome to the mix, DPC is a get-out-what-you-put-in sort of place, so use the forums for questions, we're usually more than happy to answer, even if it has been asked 40 times before (yes, a search is still faster and easier, so I do recommend it, but whatever, we like to chat about photography anyway, so there's no harm in asking just about anything here)... Also be sure to check out the tutorials under the "Learn" section above.

Oh, and watch out for the Bear. ;)

ETA: What area of Colorado are you in? We have a few members there, most notably Hahn23, who is quite an excellent wildlife photographer.

Speaking of photography, what, besides stock, do you enjoy shooting?

Welcome, and remember that when someone says that your picture is "a eye gouging nightmare" the next one might read "Refreshingly different" or "great effect. well done" or "nice radical processing (for dpc)" It is all done in the spirit of making you better. This comment alone: "a eye gouging nightmare" has made me a better Photographer without a doubt. Good luck, and as Wendy said wear your Armor with pride.
P.S. all four comments above were on the same capture.

I don't know about that. Four of my top five shats are of my kids, including my one and only ribbon, they're all above six and finished 79% and higher. Sjhuls and Timfythetoo have made DPC careers out of shooting kids(that sounds terrible).

Anyway, welcome Reckless. It's always nice to welcome a fellow Coloradan.

Welcome to the madness/mayhem/chaos.

Have fun.

Don't take anything too personally.

Well the club is called "We Hate smardaz". We didn't think it'd be appropriate. The turnout was fantastic though.

Thanks everyone for making me feel welcome, much the same way my family does. It's always good to visit family then let the welts, bruises and knots on the head heal keep one humble and less self important. No problem there as I am well aware of many short-comings in my photography skills.

@ Cory, I live north of Greeley in the small town of Eaton, and @ smardaz, funny you should point that guy out as I have seen his sorry self before.

You basically are a neighbor with Hahn23 then. :)

And me too.

There are several local groups that take place in the Fort Collins area where I reside, if you're ever curious.

Also, I shoot with a D300 as well so I'm more than well acquainted with it.

Welcome to the community and don't hesitate to ask questions and learn. It's a great place for it. I also encourage you to look over all the other entries in the challenges. Seeing what does and doesn't work in others work will help you look at your own images in a critical fashion, as well.

Here's another good introduction to DPC, and don't forget about the How'd They Do That section and the Tutorials.

Jeez, why do I always forget that you're in Colorado too?
