Photography a safe hobby? Not if you consider how we stare at the sky as we're driving, tripping over things in the pursuit of capturing an elusive subject, and last but not least mad dogs chasing you in the woods!!
Yeah, that last one happened to me on Sunday while I was shooting a picture for the landscape challenge, totally ruined what was up till then a great mornings photography...

Any other bad experiences, you guys?

It was a semi foggy day and I was landscape hunting. I swerved into the other lane and swerved back narrowly missing a crash. I think that would have to be one of my closest calls.

I have a sprained ankle from slipping on some ice going downhill, after doing this week's challenge.

hope I don't get knocked down doing the road signs!

Rick, I reckon we should all stick a strip on the back and front screens of our cars saying "BEWARE: PHOTOGRAPHER!!"

Aurora, take care (or else maybe avoid taking part in this challenge?)
Just don't go shooting any "No Limits" roadsigns :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I nearly stepped on a Red-bellied Black Snake whilst wandering through the bush for the photojournalism challenge. It sent shivers down my spine as I was a long way from the car and miles from anywhere.

Oh my goodness! You are so right! I went up into the mountains 2 weeks ago and pulled onto a small dirt road where immediately, three large dogs attacked my car. I had my driver window open and was really frightened by one of the dog who stuck his head inside. I slowly rolled up the window and he ducked out. Funny thing, the owner of the dogs did nothing. Then last weekend, trying to get a shot for the landscape challenge, I was caught off guard by a very slick mound of ice and I went flying. Another time I nearly lost my camera in a large wave that seemed to come from nowhere when I was on the beach shooting seastacks. On each occasion, my camera came out unscathed, me? I'll never be the same :)

My family has long ago written me off as hopeless. One Sunday, we were all at mom's and the guys were watching a NASCAR race. There was a horrific crash that nearly took out some scaffolding stuff some cameramen were on. Someone commented, "I bet that scared them." To which I responded, "Man, I bet someone got some cool pictures." :-/

I just figured that I would clobber a dog with my tripod (if attacked).

I once nearly destroyed a $80,000 video camera. I was doing a story on a visiting General to the local High School. I put the camera on the tripod and thought it was locked. Some kid bumped it and the camera started falling. I grabbed this enormous camera with one hand at the battery pack 1 inch from the floor and saved the day. The General saw everything and said "Nice Catch!"

I've been very lucky with my own personal camera so far. Knock on wood.

I often take my dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, with me when I go photographing the local scenery. I always wondered why I ended up with all the best spots to myself ;D

I had a big scare when I went diving underwater to get a underwater shot in the lagoon here in Mauritius, when I had gone too close to a electric ray who promply covered my head with his body. Fortunately I never got shocked, not that I knew at the time that it was an electric ray.

Well at least it's a healthy hobby, you sure get lots of fresh air! Keeps me out of the pub too :-)

As long as you clobber it with the right end, not the end with the camera on it!

Mark, how did you survive the dogs? Did they catch you? Did you have to run? Did they belong to the Baskervilles?

I`ll blind `em with my speedlite 550EX, soon as I learn how to use it...

There was a flimsy barb wire fence between us, seemed to put em off getting too close.

ROFLMAO!

My only real near-death photo experience came while taking this:

I'm scared to death of heights anyway, and the bridge was really bouncing while I was leaning over it. EEP. I got a couple of strange looks from people too, but I'm just used to that. LOL
