I'm very pleased with how the last couple of Engagement shoots (and weddings) have gone. This shot... was from one and i'm particularly pleased with how a more recent one, on top of a mountain in Wales, went. I feel i'm getting into a bit of a groove with what i want to do with the wedding photography in the future.

It's always good to get some DPC second opinions though and i'd be really keen on seeing what people think. I might be missing something. I think i may have been a bit heavy handed with the processing on some of them so i might tone them down.

Photos on the blog here…..

(I'll get round to uploading some to DPC soon i think as that is often easier for commenting.)

Any thoughts very much appreciated as always!

Clive, how sweet that romance brings out the best side of these couples! I posted a comment for you. I have to say that my favorite images show the character of the couple when completely unaware of your presence and playfully memorizing each other. Beautiful natural environments as well. ;-)

Thanks Mae! Yes, those natural shots are the best. The shared glances. It's great to capture them.

Nice work and a wonderful shooting style. I don't see those type of engagement shoots using a wider angle perspective from folks in this area. So that is very original! Love the color and mood of the processing on your engagement shoots. I am wondering about the sharpness. Are you going for a film type look to your shots, or are you intentionally leaving them on the soft side? The sharpness as it stands makes me think your prints are coming out with a film vibe to them rather than digital. But I just wanted to ask is that on purpose and what is it accomplishing as far as the mood for the shoot?

Thanks for the comments everyone. Very encouraging!

As to the sharpness Ed-thats a very good point. I think it's a matter of a few things really. Yes, i am after a kind of film feel to it and i sometimes apply extra softness to the shot through things like a small touch of Glamour Glow in Nik Colour Efex during processing. I can't remember if i did much of that with these though but what processing i did do might of softened them down. In the wide shots i would like the couple sharp though so i'll have to work on that. During these shoots i use my two favourite lenses - Nikon 85mm 1.4 and the manual focus Nikon 28mm 2.8 ais. Now, for the wide shots with the big sky and shallow d.o.f i use the 85mm to get the effect i want. This lens is a stunning portrait lens at close to medium distance but wasn't really designed for long to infinity i don't think and i've noticed that it can be soft in the distance at wider apertures. The 28mm is stunning sharp all along and works for some shots but doesn't get me where i want for others.

I'm not generally too concerned about super sharpness on many of these types of shots though- close up head shots and such i am, but i think for these mountain ones about of softness is ok. For the earlier shoot such as the Feel Good entry i hope i have got things a bit sharper.

FWIW, your site is EXTREMELY slow. not sure if the servers are overloaded or what, but i could only access it once yesterday and I wasn't able to go back for a second look and even this morning i cant load any of the images at worthwhile pace..

That's really good to know Mike. I wonder if my file sizes are too big. I tend to upload DPCish sized images to sites these days. Around 800-1000 pixels on the long end and around 200-400kb size. I figured the days of having to squash jpegs right down were behind us, and that many places would re-size anyway, but perhaps i'm being naive. What size do others tend to aim for? Should i be aiming for images of less than 100k or something?

maybe its your host.

my connection here at the office is a paltry 1.5mps so i expected it to be slow here, but last night at home i have a 50mps+ connection and its was still dragging.

i would think that 400kb would be fine as i dont really have too much of a problem with the 300kb here on dpc.
