Cory, Ivo, et al. Do NOT equate honesty with rudeness. You can be perfectly honest about an image without being mean, rude, or condescending. The only reason to write rudely is to provoke a fight or to shut down dialogue.

A couple of things here. First, some people don't want an honest critique, they say they want honest feedback, but they really want validation of their self perceived greatness. Anything short of "Your image is the best thing ever, it's so beautiful I cried just looking at it." is rude and offensive to them.

Second, what some people consider rude, isn't what other people would consider rude.

I remember when I was in art school, the department periodically arranged for a pro to come and review our portfolios, sometimes it was a photographer, other times they had art directors or other buyers come in. Some people would leave in tears because they didn't receive accolades from the reviewer. Others received equal criticism, but used those comments to improve their work and take it to a new level.

In-class critiques could be just as honest and at times, harsh.

Some people take even the slightest critique as rude, others are far less sensitive about it, and while I don't advocate rudeness, I also don't like the feeling of questioning everything I say 50 times before posting it because someone might take it in a manner other than that in which it was intended.

That's unfortunately the world we live in. You have to PG everything down so we don't trample the delicate flowers.

Heh... I think some trampling is good for the flowers as a species. ;) Even when I'm the flower getting trampled. lol.

I could either respond to you as follows:

You're an ass with a deplorable lack of understanding of even the most basic social skills, and should stick to playing online video games with other losers instead of flaunting your despicable insecurity by mocking common courtesy and civility as being a pathetically politically correct aberration.

Or I could say:

It does not appear you appreciate the importance of civil discourse. Yes, people have varying degrees of tolerance towards any sort of feedback, but everyone reacts to provocation, and I find that a many of your otherwuse valid comments are written in very provocative and intentionally hurtful language. We cannot be responsible for other people's perceptions, but we must take responsibility for our choice of words. You are neither assuming that responsibility, nor your part in problem.

I think harsh criticism is fine, I don't even mind blunt stuff when it comes to my own shots. I do however think it needs to be done in a somewhat delicate manner, especially if it's in a challenge and you don't know who the person is, because newbies need to be encouraged as well as critiqued. If someone puts in their first shot to a challenge and they get seven comments that say "the lighting is terrible" "did you even try to focus" etc. they may just decide to blow this popsicle stand. But, if they get seven comments that say "I think the lighting needs work, here's what I would do ........" and "it needs to be sharper, maybe try manul focus next time because auto focus can let you down on these types of shots", the person is much more apt to stick around and learn some stuff.

Just my two cents.

Ivo,

I'm almost certain you're just messing about. But I do disagree, we should never take the former tone, and always the latter, no matter what the content of our message.

I dismiss the first as simple asshattery while rejecting the latter as excessivley verbose.

I would argue that it is just plain provocative. And there is no discernible difference between those accused of having overly thin skin and those who refuse to make the slightest adjustment to their writing style to better serve the greater community.

Incidentally, you chose to quote me, then changed what I wrote. It is one or the other. That you heard "nice kittens, stupid fluff" are your thoughts, not mine.

Know what, you're right. I should have taken greater care when choosing to poke fun as it obviously has hurt your feelings. I guess I am far less sensitive to a little bit of poking than you and many others on this site. There is no argument my comment was plain provocative as that was my intention. If my assertions have in any w .. ay ...ri ...sputter ...

Aww crap ... I did not say "Nice Kittens", I said "New Booties for Kittens"!

Got some pretty nifty shots in your portfolio BTW. ;-)

The second part of what you wrote is twice as annoying as the first. I the first, the way you've written it, you're being an ass, but at least the feelings seem pure and I can understand your point. In the second part, you're tiptoing around saying what you feel so much that by the time I figure it out, I don't care.

@ Ivo, thanks. Wish we could all just get back to photography. FWIW, my feelings were not hurt. Way beyond these petty games.

@ Spork99, no worries if you don't care. Apparently that's the problem.

On the up side, it does seem that the forum activity has picked up nicely today. ;)

Gotta admit... I was a little surprised and miffed at that. The SC who took that action has always struck me as very reasonable, and I thought we had done a rather good job of getting that thread back on track without help... Clearly she disagreed for some reason.

Naw. It was the right thing to do. Those of us who were not directly involved many times want to look for answers and feel the need to discuss something. But as ancientimages pointed out earlier in the thread, it's much more personal to those who are directly affected. And the comments may seem heartless and callous. Whereas everyone is allowed their opinions, and the discussion can be interesting. There are times where it's just not felt as appropriate. And I assume that the site council thought there was a better time and place for that discussion, and it's not here or now. I respect that decision.

It's not that I don't care about what you think, it's that you invalidate your message by dancing around what you want to say instead of just saying it.

That thread was ugly. The guy had a break with reality and was acting more than a bit unhinged. The dignified thing to do is hide the mess from public view.

I think you're thinking about something altogether different.

Because of all of the 9 billion other places that event was being debated, discussed and analyzed, DPC is by far most likely to be read by the survivors/victims.
