I have recently returned to DPC after a long hiatus. Just paid my membership last week. I have no problem with the layout of the site. It is fast and accessible. One thing I hate are flashy animations and pizzazz.

I'm looking forward to the site giving me the impetus to get out there and dust off the old camera for a bit.

There is one feature that might help the site grow its traffic - a Facebook share button. It would easily allow me to let my friends know about a challenge that I have entered. Some of them might come over and check out my entry. Some of them might sign up themselves.

I think management is of the opinion Facebook is going to be a flash in the pan. ;)

would still like updates to make it better, however.

You do realize of the last 10 comments you have received only one barely rises above "wow, nice"... The days of quality comments are long gone. I go back to some of my 2005 entries and marvel at how long the comments were compared to now.

Ew. I just looked at my "Critique club" page.

You haven't critiqued any photographs in the past two weeks.

Your last critique was on June 25 2010.

Wow I suck. I am definitely not part of the solution at this time.

i don't think DPC needs a major overhaul but it does need a pick me up in the visual to at least try to appeal the new members.

we have made lots of suggestions on get satisfaction and it would nice to at least here some updates on plans to implement any. it would be really really great if we had a way to see newly added images in a feed of some sort so they would get exposure. the only reason i add anything to my portfolio is to self promote it, no one would ever see it otherwise.

i still think we need some sort of comment incentive system. not based on the quantity we give out but quality, what if we were able to score our comments?

DPC does a lots of things good, but it doesn't do one thing great. it needs to try to because it not hard to supplement one good thing with a bunch of individual great things.

AWESOME! as i mentioned before, dpc is a great launch pad. i know ya'll will do extremely well.

as for dpc, here's another take on it...

it's like an old tourist attraction. you remember it fondly from your youth. however, since its owners never really cared about keeping up with the times, your kids don't see the attraction when you take them there.

the point is, yep, it's fine for us, but getting harder and harder to attract new members who will stay around for very long.

i agree that it doesn't need to be overhauled, but dang, if we could just get some basic updates. seriously, a like button for thread posts? for images? for galleries? to be able to comment on galleries?

the thing is, almost any improvement could be outsourced without having to give up access to the entire codebase. just spec out little things, get them done and tested and implemented. just like the little farmer that has a successful vegetable stand. after a while he realizes that everybody wins if he focuses on running the stand and selling what other people grow, that he doesn't have to do it all...

I haven't noticed much of a difference. Stock photos still generate short empty comments and photographs still generate the more meaningful, longer comments. Little has changed in that regard.

In the past you would never see photos uploaded two days ago still on the first page. That would change in a heartbeat if there was a section on the home page devoted to displaying the first row of new uploads.

Yes, the new images can be found on that page, but I think the idea of a feed on the home page might help new images get more notice. Being able to customize it to highlight photographers in your favorites list would be a nice bonus. I would not mind seeing the recently favorited image page a feed also. "Pushing" these images to the site visitor rather than making him/her search for them just makes it more viewer friendly.

Yanko and mark made my points for me. I was aware of that page but im lazy, and so are others, the site needs to show us the images.

You should go on PBase and look at the newest photo gallery, which is pretty much what you're suggesting to promote DPC. It's usually nothing special, just a bunch of snapshots and often not very good ones. Even a lot of the photos on the DPC page look like shots of photo gear for an eBay listing. If I want to promote my work, that's not really the kind of thing I want my images posted alongside and it doesn't do anything for DPC's image either.

If you're interested in showcasing on the front page the kind of work that does well here on DPC in addition to the current challenge winners, a gallery of random shots from the top 10 or top 5 from all of the challenges would do that far better than a "Newest Uploads" gallery.

If you're interested in promoting yourself and your own photos, you should link to your profile or get your own webpage.

I can also see some people uploading their entire portfolio of images repeatedly to keep their photos on the front page.

Well you could display only the newer uploads that are trending so to speak, but that might make it too complicated for the hamsters.

Activity in the forums for the last 24 hours has been minimal, the last big bust up seems to have taken it's toll.
07/21/2012 07:43:35 PM · #140
A picture in the bottom 1000 from 2005 received 98 comments during voting. DURING voting. Granted, almost all of them were DNMC, but there were 98 people who took the time to at least point that out.

DURING voting. 98 comments.

We don't even get 98 entries very often anymore, and have a very hard time getting to 100 votes, it seems.

Hit the community button and see just how puny the activity has been. Way off from it's hay day. Can whoever is last to leave turn off the light?

Cue Monty Python musical Spamalot's "Not Dead Yet":-)

DPC may be quiet on the 'front page' of things but it seems the activity has gone elsewhere to my surprise.

Just look at the stats for 2 of the current challenges in voting

By the way if you are curious on how I got the current count of numbers of challenges that are still in voting stage just go to the voting page and right next to the challenge title there is a little page icon - click on that and you get the stats.

Nope, not everybody has left. "We" are still talking. And besides, think of the original purpose of this site:

DPChallenge was created in January 2002 by two friends, Drew Ungvarsky (drewmedia) and Langdon Oliver (langdon). The original idea behind the site was for it to be a place where the two of us and a couple of our friends could teach ourselves to be better photographers by giving each other a 'challenge' for the week. The idea quickly took off and became much more in the months that followed.

In December 2002, we released the 2nd version of our site with a number of new features, including concurrent challenges. We also added site membership as a way to support our ever-growing physical and time demands.

DPC really is friends getting together to discuss photography and to see how to improve our work. With the implied being that we have fun doing it.

It could be that quality comments that were somewhat reflective of the truth would on occasion raise the hackles of the recipient and the ensuing kerfuffle did little to encourage honest interaction.

We have witnessed such scenarios even of late.

In my thousands of comments I think I've run across that two or three times. I don't think that's the real reason commenting is down.

Well, yes I have been lurking. Purchased yet another membership a while back with the thought that I'd throw in a photo or two and have not been able to muster enough ambition to do so. Why? Because the site is boring and sanitized!! Once upon a time there were a whole heap of "artists" wanting to hang their photos and get a feel of what the crowd thought. There were some great ideas, some heated exchanges and some incredible characters. The way you got back in someone's face was to produce an image that would make them say ..."Well, the guy/gal is a real jerk but damn they are good"! That was the challenge! Sitting back and "lurking" yeah ...whatever ... I read these silly cudley "muffin exchanges" and can see clearly why most folks high tail it out of here.

Yeah, I pissed many folks off and I got pissed off many times as well. That sort of volatility attracted a unique blend of quirky characters that snubbed their noses at the rest of us with outstanding works of photographic art. DAmn, even I was impressed with some of the stuff I was producing because I wanted to show them "Big Time" superstars that I can see things as well. That was the essence of this place and it is gone. Yes....gone. I remember telling Joey Lawrence one of his submissions was crap .... due to the theme. Well guess what ...he showed me. He showed all of us because he proved he can be better. The thick skinned kid has excelled to atmospheric levels because he was pushed and he pushed back! That is what allowed him to blossom and that is what this place once was.

Langdon had this site hijacked from him long ago when the PC crowd came in and sanitized it. It became boring, filled with boring entries and boring banter. This place was once a wild horse snorting with potential with Langdon at the reigns. He had no choice but to pay attention!

This idea of "just submit a photo" is what has turned most challenges into "Aunt Edna's photo album". "Aww shucks ...what a neat image" and "Gee, you are a super human being" seems to be the mantra. The only learning going on here is how to be generic.

There ya go .... have fun with "Ivo's visit"
