Maybe if we do that we'll be satisfied and we'll stop bitching about everything and as a consequence the site will have a happier more inviting atmosphere. The truth of the matter is, if we seek praise from others we can never be truly satisfied, briefly elated yes but the opposite is also true and that's what all the grief here has been about lately, behind all the excuses for arguing, its all about lack of praise and recognition. In the context of a challenge let us just shoot from the heart with no thought of praise, the results will be fantastic on every level I'm sure, of course we should also vote in the same way.

What if we take meaningful photographs, which are meaningful to ourselves as individuals, and these images are then panned by the current block of DPC voters? I don't need a kick in the teeth every morning. And, I'm not going to change my beloved style of photography to be more "DPC-friendly". So, for my mental health, I think it's rational and an act of "progress" to leave here. I've been here for 6 years and have entered nearly 600 challenges. I absolutely know that not everyone will like my photography. But, I think there are better places for me somewhere else, right now.

You're right -- DPC has changed and the voting has changed. But I don't think it has changed in the way you think it has. It's not tactical voting. There may very well be a few, but there has always been those few. Even though we see the same people in the forums, it's still a fluid group. People come and go, tastes change, so the voting changes.

About a year ago, I noticed that voting had changed. Photos that normally would have done quite well were suddenly in the "meh" range. I thought that people were just voting harshly, but then I realized that the winners were still up in the 7+ range. It wasn't that people were voting things down -- tastes had just changed, and my stuff wasn't as interesting anymore.

So I changed. And I wondered how I could take it to the next level.

I'm one of the lucky few. I can worry about score and shoot from the heart at the same time, because I happen to really like the type of photography that does well here. I shoot what I like. But since I'm also a competitive person, I wonder how to bring things to the next level within the scope of what I enjoy. It has taken me places that I never would have expected.

The whole point of this site, imo, is to grow and learn. And that's completely up to each individual. And that should be the final goal.

I've not commented on this thread yet any only read bits and pieces of it. Here is my take. Yes activity level is down. What is not unusual is that some of the people that were active when I started are not active now, why? We all have our reasons some of us learn what we can here and move on, others get offended, some just get tired of it and look for other things to do. That isn't the part that matters, what matters is that this site is not generating new people for some reason. I've said this enough times that I feel like I am beating a dead horse but DPC needs to get with the times. They need to have a presence on facebook, I think if they did the numbers of entrants in challenges would double in a matter of months as well as the numbers of votes on a challenge. I think the main problem I am seeing is the low number of votes on each challenge. How can we get a good average with such low numbers?

+1

agree that the exposure to mainstream social media would result in a burst of new activity. and i would like to see it.

however, then we'll have the forums flooded with complaints about the changing/newbie culture/voting/etc :)

said tongue in cheek of course, truth is i think this is a fantastic idea.

I have been wondering about the very thing you suggest as a possible solution Jennifer.

Here is a question I have for all folks here on the site - have you ever posted or blogged about the merits of DPC in your personal journals (be it Facebook or something else)? Word of mouth is also a powerful draw.

I have compared my last 2 member challenges to my first 2member challenges and there are 10-20% less votes on the latest challenges.
What I really don't like is the voting, I am pretty much of the same opinion as Hahn23, getting a 1 vote is like saying wow do you even know what a camera is used for. I don't profess to be a good photographer but I have come a fair way and get annoyed at the voting when the votes are coming in which are insulting and the voter doesn't justify such a low vote, it can only be down to personal choice.

I am a few months away from renewal but the way things are at the moment I doubt I will renew, there are so many things that need changing that have been mentioned in this thread, but nothing ever changes.

I will sound like a trade unionist but the way to make the hierarchy sit up and take notice is to not enter a challenge, if there were no entries in a challenge then maybe someone will sit up and take notice.

I get annoyed when people can't understand not every voter uses the same criteria. I know it's crazy, but we're all individuals with different preferences.

so long as one is consistent, it shouldn't matter how they vote.

too much emphasis is placed on trying to figure out the voters and not enough on how to improve ones own images.

So I take it neither of you get annoyed when you receive a 1-3 vote without any suggestion as to why it is so poor to the voter?

I have taken shots that have deserved such low scores then there are shots that have great average from commenters and most voters but then you see those 1-3 votes. Just because the image is not to your personal taste should not justify a 1-3 vote.
07/30/2012 11:08:47 AM · #262
Look at today's ribbon winners they all have those low votes, seriously do any of those images deserve a vote of 6 or below???

Excellent - Then all I have to do is submit 30 seconds before rollover and I'll have my first guaranteed ribbon!

We all have differing views but a 1? So out of all the images in the challenge that was one of the worst? Even if you don't like that particular type of photography it doesn't warrant a 1, surely the technicals would justify a higher mark from the voter?

This for me is where hahn23 and myself are coming from, who wants that hastle. I thought the voters may appreciate effort, originality and tecnicals to mention a few, yet it looks like some voters are merely voting on what they like and don't like with no other thought or consideration.

Eventually everyone will become pissed off and leave and with no new members coming in to fill those places that are left behind this place will be left barren and lifeless.

sure it does, so long as i vote every water drop or bubble image the same way, what does it matter? people vote tone mapped images a certian way, people vote nude a certain way, people vote violent a certain way.
some people vote of technical merit, others vote on how pretty it looks.

my vote is just a small piece of what makes up the DPC preferred style. every photo ranking site has its own preferred style. It is what it is.

Must admit I don't care for this place much anymore. Too much bickering and holierthanthou.
07/30/2012 12:34:23 PM · #269
That's personal preference but it doesn't help the person who took the shot nor does it assist the site by voting an image down just because you don't like that type of image.
The whole point of this should be to overhaul the scoring system amongst other things. Your personal preference would be a 1 but that shouldn't be the only thing the voter bases their vote on.
I imagine you don't leave a comment on those 1's that are left "sorry I don't like water drops. 1"
Sometimes the votes can be as detrimental as the negativity in the forums.

We are all here to learn whilst being competitive so a 1 vote I.e you entered a cat in a dog challenge have their place but not just because it's not to taste. Give me a 1 just tell me how I can improve the shot so some positive can be taken from the time and effort that was put into the challenge.

you know, if this place had built-in chat, half the crap that goes on in the forums would never see the light of day, because people would be able to engage each other in private...
