A friend of ours has a daughter that is doing a photo project and one of the photo topics, she needs to create a photo of her friends that appears they are hanging from the ceiling. Without doing a major setup does anyone have a good idea how to accomplish this illusion. also keep in mind the camera will be a point and shoot.

My only guess other than building a ceiling on the floor would be to get them jumping as close to the ceiling as possible while holding some prop like a ceiling light to create the illusion of hanging on a light.

I would love to hear some of the more creative ideas people here come up with.

Take two photo's and blend in Photoshop...

One photo of the room with the ceiling.
One photo of the girls "hanging" in front of a green background (couple bucks from fabric store)

Blend layers, and hope for an A!

I should have added it has to be a photo and not created in PS, but yes that would be easier...

two options here then as I see it.

Get a big fan (maybe 2? front & back?), put it under her and make her wear clothing that won't blow upwards, to simulate gravity pulling her hair down.

or

Get a tripod, take a picture of the room, without rigging or girl.

Rig room to have a pulley and rope system to hoist girl to ceiling, make sure to have this at 180 degrees to the camera's pov if you don't want to blend in the first image to hide ropes.

Lighting could be anything of a variety of choices, but natural light would be easiest, perhaps a room with sheer curtains for diffuse sunlight? It would give it that genuine look, or you could use a few speedlights to set up a slick commercial looking shot.

I would suggest a drink in her hand in either case, in the first picture, you'd need Jello so it would stay in, in the second, obviously, you won't need anything other than a glass of something that's not clear.

Easier still, have her stand on a solid surface a few feet up, put her hands on the ceiling spread apart, hair in a pony tail with a solid beam object to add height to the hair, raise camera above head, shoot upside down, then you're doing a handstand or walking on your hands on the ceiling.

I saw some pretty good illusions using shadows, I am thinking that maybe controlling the shadows to make it appear one of her friends is hanging from the ceiling. The hard part of the description is the hanging from the ceiling so to me you have to have something to hang onto. The other assignments she has had all have dealt with perspective so I am assuming using perspective may be the way to go.

I think Kelli has pointed the way to the easiest path. It doesn't take much to make the bottom edge of a picture read as "floor". A fake plant in a plastic pot, an area rug stapled to the wall, and a lamp hung from the ceiling to make it look like it is standing on the "floor". A drop cloth to turn the flooring into wallpaper.

Just find a room where the features can be hidden by your props as to what direction is which, and let the viewers assumptions do the rest.

Here's a simple one, it plays a trick with your mind, try it with any mask

I've done something similar here. You can read there how I created it.

I have found the easiest way to create an illusion of flying or hanging is to have the subject lay on the floor and arrange clothes and hair so that it appears to be floating or falling. Of course it does create difficulties if you have no way to edit the background as it usually makes shadows that would kill the effect.

If you do have a way to edit a background in try to get the background that they are laying on as close to the same color as the scene you are putting them in. For instance in this shot the angel was shot on a white background so that if I wasn't perfect with my selection it didn't show much. The dark angel would be easiest shot on a grey background to match the smoke. That way I don't have to worry about being perfect around her hair.

I also used a similar effect in these two photos both are laying down:

So if it were me I would take one photo of whatever they were to be hanging from, and then take a photo of the person laying on the ground with a similar colored background and then merge them in Photoshop.
