Hey, I'm thinking of replacing my 500w Ghetto Studio shoplight with a 1000w version. Do you all feel this is a good or bad idea? I really would prefer a faster shutter speed when taking portraits and with the 500w I'm limited to 40 to 60 shutter speed and around 4 or 5 aperture.

Anyone have any experience with 1000w?

Hmmmm -- I think I'd tend toward getting additional 500W lights -- unless of course you can get a 1000W that has a variable intensity switch on it. If you decide you only need 500W for an especially moody pic, you've got it. Or if you need to light from different angles you can with multiple lights. Or if you simply need a brightly lit scene, just plug in both of the lamps and train 'em on your subject.

If you just grab the 1000W, you limit what you can do. Does that make any sense?

Where did you guys buy your 500W lights? I saw one at my local Home Depot and it doesn't even have a cable to plug it into the wall, neither did I see how to place it on the floor.

Did you have to buy a base and a pole to make a stand for it?

Got mine at Wal-Mart -- and the length of the plug was a joke so I bought extenison cords. The ones I bought had "stands" built into them.

They look basically like the one on this page. (Only I took the grill off mine to avoid shadows.)

I agree with what was said above, two 500 watt lamps would offer more flexibility.

Thanks for the suggestions! Maybe I'll have 1 - 1000w and 1 - 500w, that way I can have the best of both worlds!

Patella, thanks for the link. Those lights seem pretty useful. I think I'm going to order a couple from them.
