Geez these guys and gals are good!! I have a fairly good pic but don't stand a chance. One thing I didn't like however was an inordinate ammount of B&W photos. Too often I think it is used to avoid color problems, or lengthy edit times. Some of the B&W would have been much better in color. Tough week. Now onto "Signs"... not many odd or interesting ones on this small island :-(

I think my 'portrait style' landscape has about 5,000 non land things in it. Oops. :- )

*laughing at the remark about trees being "non land things"*

What is wrong with PBase these days?? For the last several weeks it takes about 20 seconds between clicking on images or else you get the last image pasted into the current image's size/orientation. You see the same image again but in the new picture you've clicked on. It's really irratating to have to backup, reclick the new picture you want to view, etc. I looked at a few images (they look good) but I can't deal with PBase tonight. :)

Mine's not doing well, and it is technically a landscape but non-traditional and I left the traditional shots in my pbase gallery, which would have scored better.

But, I submitted the one I liked the best for reasons I'll explain after it is over. My outtakes are at my home gallery
and they're nothing like the one I submitted, so if anyone wants to critique them, feel free.

Great shots everyone! I only had to hand out 8 sub-5 scores out of 227 shots! Excellent! :)

I did get a "stunning photo but..." comment. I did come into this with the knowledge that it might not be considered a "land" scape but I took the chance. I'm going to have fun watching the score this week, maybe next time :)

you can't say my interpretation is wrong, it's my interpretation, however just to point out to you ...
"Details: This is a classic area of photography that needs little explanation. Do your best to make your photograph as refreshing as you can. Good luck!"

to me that means we are going for the classical point of view, and if you don't then you have to respect the voters and how they understand that.
Either way, most landscape photography is down to the eye of the beholder, if you likeit you like it .. unless the image is just unbelievably stunning, in which case it gets almost everyones attention.

Joanns. That is disturbing to hear. If you are happy that is all that matters in the long run. Dave

Well, I'm happy I submitted because I have submitted the best photograph I have ever taken but the voters here totally disagree - they think it doesn't meet the challenge. Oh well.
01/13/2003 08:04:47 AM · #11
Well first it does not have to be mark down for that. that's a personal shot. Personnally if I think the shot does not meet the challenge I mark down and try to comment it so the person knows that I did -1 or -2 for not meeting the challenge in my interpretatin of it.

One problem with your explanation ,digitallywet,is that, in my opiniojn, it leads to too many conventional shots even if very nice. I think it is aggravated here by being an 'obvious' usual category , people are probably less open than usual on the interpretation of the challenge.

You can landscape a garden or an open space in an office right ?

So for sure to me barns and trees are welcome in a landscape ! I would even say it could be the cherry on top of the cake !

everyone is asking if shots with barns and trees should be marked down in this one, well there are two reasons in my mind to mark it down. there are two many non land things like trees and buildings. Or the photography is in portrait format with a distinct lack of land in it also.
I think if you do a landscape in portrait you have to really get it right. otherwise visually it does suck.

There are some awesome shots. Mine is different than others so I suspect it will be marked down. I had difficult time choosing which pic to submit. It will be neat to see who comes out on top.

I did, a little risky because I think I stretched the theme too much and there is an other obvious theme in the picture that jump to the eye so it does not help either. Like you submit a B&W portrait the the 'portait' in it is a little too 'streched' and people are saying 'it's more a B&W'.

Good luck to everybody !

I went a different way.
I am being stingy on the marking from my normal.
I am giving average marks for average landscapes, which although they are al great photos I agree, even my landscape is just another landscape, there will be the one that stands out, so I am saving the absurd marks for that photo ;)

I submitted... but I do agree that there are a lot of very fine photos this week. I've quickly voted on 70 or so (I have a fast connection) and already have 1 10 and 4-5 9s (I dont hand 10's and 9's out a whole lot... I might only have 1 or maybe 2 10's in any challenge)

I'm so sad I didn't submit to the Landscape challenge. Weather was terrible this week, and I didn't get the chance to go out of town and look for something.

I hope I do good at the Humor challenge.

I haven't started voting yet but I did look at all the landscape pictures quickly. This is going to be a hard week to vote because I think that every picture is execellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
