What makes a structure "artificial"? Is a house an artificial structure or a real structure? Does this just mean man-made?

It's not a matter of artificial/real but of artificial/natural.

A termite mound is a natural structure, as is a bird's nest or wasp hive. As opposed to "created by human hands".

That makes sense. Thanks!

Whoever lives closest to Le louvre wins, it doesn't get dark until 22.00 though.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on most of this. Any living creature that manipulates raw materials is artificially creating a structure. Terminte mound is a grey area as they are artificially creating tunnels under the ground that did not exist previously; birds scavenge whatever they can to make a nest. Wasp is the closest one in your example that fits as they excrete the substance that forms their hive and do not use materials from elsewhere in this process, but they still manipulate a raw material to do this.

By your definition of termite mound/bird's nest, i could dig a hole in the ground or gather sticks and make a pile and call them a naturally created structure because it uses only elements found in nature.

A true natural structure would be something that no living being had any part in creating, such as caves formed solely by water passing through the rock and eroding it, or as a result of tectonic disturbances forcing a violent change (earthquake) that results in a fissure in the rock.

So unless you're submitting an image of a cave/waterfall/etc, nothing will be "dnmc" and can be used for this.

The primary definition of "artificial" is "made by human skill" or "produced by humans". The termite's nest is not created by humans and therefore it is "natural". If I went out and gathered the exact same materials and created a faithful reproduction of a termite's nest, that'd be an "artificial termite's nest".

That's all the understanding of "artificial" we need to have: "created by human hands". This would CLEARLY be the intention of whoever proposed the challenge, don't you agree?

What is a structure? A wine glass is an artificial structure. Or is it?

Heck I'm wondering more about the night, lol.

I prefer to take shots just after sundown (evening, I guess rather than night?), when I can get cool silhouettes and interesting colors in the sky. Especially if my "stucture" is not a building.

Plus it gets me home earlier, lol.

But I'm guessing that would be DNMC since it's not "night" yet. *sigh*

"After Sundown" = "night" in DPC-land for sure. Most everywhere for that matter. YOu can be sure many, if not most, of the top-scoring images will be twilight shots.

Ha. Sometimes challenges play right into your hands. This week is like getting dealt a pair of pocket aces. I guess I'll have to bring my camera after all.

It's easy enough to fake :-) Sunset-into-night I mean.

Sure it is. 75% of the entries will be buildings. Bridges will be popular too.

I just "unsubmitted" my entry.

Not gonna go there... I know the city lights folks will have some spectacular stuff!

I never even took one. Didn't feel like competing with the spectacular stuff. Not complaining, just sitting one out :-)
