Hello!
Need your advice, fellow dpchallengers :)
I have agreed to take pictures of a product for one of my coworkers..
Took me around 3 hours, i have taken around 50 pictures, he chose 20..
Another couple of hours to correct brightness, contrast etc, saved for web..
He asked me for a price, but i have no idea how much to charge..
I did look on the internet, but there are different schemas, usually 2 pictures for each of 20 products, not the other way around :), and usually charging per product..
The jpgs will be only for web, not for printing..
How should i charge, better per hour, or per photo?
Thanks very much for any advice!

Hourly has to be worth more.

what's your professional fee? Is this your first time?

If I were a first timer I would bill it like a consulting business until I figured out the market.

$65/HR x 5 hrs. + meeting = $325 to $390 depending on what you are charging for the proof meeting.

This is my first time, and I am full time something else :)
I am not a professional photographer (I would like to become one one day though), it is just my hobby..
The photos though are fine, I have a small tent, difussers, etc, and I believe the photos are nice quality, so the client says :)

Thanks Ed!

hi, Stefania!

this is one of the easiest ways to make some quick cash with your camera. it really comes down to efficiency, and that comes with practice. if you want to do this, practice as much as you can at home. go through the whole process until you can do it all quickly and precisely: setting up, dialing in, shooting, breaking down, and processing.

you will be better off pricing per piece (which is why efficiency is critical). at a minimum, you should get $10 per image delivered. you will not make much per hour while you are learning, but once you figure out the whole process, you can do very well.

other charges not to overlook:
* on-location charge: $50 (to cover travel, setup and breakdown)
* product size (up-charge for larger products)
* usage: web-only vs web & print - each requires a different type of post-processing
* delivery: free for emailing a zip file under 10mb, $5 for ftp, $15 to mail a disk, $25 to deliver a disk
* rush charge: 3x regular rates (especially if shooting and processing on location)

once you have enough of a portfolio, all you need is a basic website and some collateral (postcards, glossy flyers, business cards - you might spend a couple hundred or so, but it will be worth it in the long run) and you're good to go.

good luck!

[oh yeah: business license, insurance, accountant, attorney, taxes, blah-blah-blah...you can make this as complicated as you need to, or not. you might want to pm strikeslip about what he does]

Stefania, well done on getting your first job however, it may have been more prudent to ask this question before you did the work?

Ha thanks for this, I just did a product shoot, (aromatherapy products) and it took me longer than I thought, Only charged $150.00, but it was worth the experience. She liked my stuff as is going to recommend me to others now, although product photography is not my thing it can lead to other ventures.

This info was helpful.
