My wife has taken up a pretty serious interest in photography and I have come to the conclusion that we need to add a second body as there are too many times when we both want to shoot.
Our current body is a T3i and I am looking at adding either the 60d or 7d at this time. My eventual plan is to open a small studio and get a full frame camera in the next 3 or 4 years. The body I buy now would become the backup.
I'm leaning towards the 60d and using the extra money to add a nice piece of glass. Any super compelling reasons to spend the additional $500 or so on the 7d?

It all depends on whether you feel you will utilize the advanced AF system and speed of the 7D.
IQ wise the both are about identical to your t3i. |

| Definitely get some good L glass. You will never regret buying good glass and once you have it it is hard to look back. |

I could be wrong on thiis, so dont trust me, but i thought the 7dwhite was a better body construction, sealing, etc. More on the professional end.
Also, the speed is REALLY sweet if you do nature photography. |

The Canon T3i is a great camera with good image quality and handy for a backup and travel.
If you are serious about getting into photography then just go for the 5D III now (maybe wait a little until the price drops a bit)
That way you won't have to sell a camera to upgrade and lose money on it.
Full Frame lenses will work on both cameras and the 5D III is a lot of camera and will perform for many many years creating amazing images.
If you know that's where you want to head then it might make more sense to do it from the beginning. |

I kind of agree with  RamblinR in that getting a FF body now may be the way to go. If you plan on shooting in studio with controlled lighting and are going to stay on that path then I say get the cheaper camera and good glass. If you want to shoot something that requires the AF system of the 7D then it's up to you to decide if it's worth the 500 extra. Personally, I'd just get a couple of 1Dx bodies !) |
