There is absolutely no scientific evidence showing that by following the rule of third or the golden mean makes a photograph more pleasing. Yeah, I know, we've told this many times in the past, all the books I own say something similar, but nothing to substantiate that claim. From now on, I'm going to follow the rule of e, because hey, it shows up in nature also.

What you mean is that there's no definitive proof. There is plenty of evidence to suggest it IS significant. There is no similar evidence for e or pi or the square root of five. The square root of 2 does have photographic significance, but only from the standpoint of the inverse square rule.

To your point, there's no definitive proof smoking causes cancer either.

Jeez, what a tedious discussion. I clicked on the Fine Art thread for adventure. Get it together lads.

Pie in the sky. Who cares about that when you have wonderful photographs like this...

06/15/2012 05:14:24 PM · #55
I have proof that pie in the sky can be derived from the square root of 17, but only if you are smoking with one lung. If you use two lungs, the pie falls. When the pie falls you get cancer, and then they send your kid off to Granpa's house on a train.

Mmmmmm pie. I like chocolate pie the best. or apple. or cherry. or a good tourtiere.

It must be juried because the voters often give ribbons to some real crap that the jury has the taste to weed out of any awards.

Also Pi in the sky is the Fibonacci sequence.

...and of course, one would assume that the jury is indeed qualified to render such a decision.

Truth be told, even juries have been known on occasion to proffer opinions and advice that did not withstand the test of time.

Crappy decisions are not necessarily the exclusive domain of the masses of the great unwashed... they have been known to permeate the ranks of those we consider knowledgeable in the realm of fine arts.

Just another man's opinion.

Yeah but the symptom is always the same. Whether you're a juror or a regular voter, you're more likely to celebrate the photo that you feel will meet your peers' approval. So the solution is to have better peers who actually know something. We could form a jury that was more discriminating, but unfortunately we drove most of them off and discouraged others from joining due to our long standing hostility towards art in general. We're a site who produces and idolizes stock photographers. We throw away the wheat and keep the chaff. That's who we are. Until that changes and we start to respect the work and thoughts of the few artists that remain (ex. cutout, zeuszen, etc) then we'll never have a jury that will be comfortable in making the type of choices (or no choices) that should be made.

Yup. Anyone can create a jury. Why not have side juries on the Fine Arts?

What's important is having the fine arts challenge!

Yes, I was being facetious about the survey. Have multiple juries.

It's true, this site does produce & idolize stock photographers. Anyone who is in favor of art photography is told by other members to leave & go join some other site. I admire the few artists who remain, & who persist in their artist ways. If not for them, I would not renew my membership.

Where is the enthusiasm for this challenge? Has it died completely? Have we lost the art of art?

This site NEEDS this challenge.

from one who is in favor or more confined challenges, it doesn't get any better broader than "fine art", so i vote nay, however i dont have to to play, im sure there are many others that would like this.

I still think it's a good idea.

I'd love this, Im a torn individual between more popular shots on here and the more obscure art ones that don't appeal to the main stream,

What was wrong with the art of 2011 jury, don't mean the whole dq spat thing either.

I'm a big fan of getting this going...

Only extra rule I'd add, is allowing two weeks to take the photos... and two weeks to vote... :)

I think this would be great.

I like the suggestion for the texture overlay.

I have always hankered after fine art, ever so broadly and vaguely. Make it so.

How about Expert editing Fine Art :)
08/09/2012 08:53:36 PM · #75
Considering that there truly does not exist any consensus at to what exactly constitute "Fine Arts" why not simply call it a "Fine Arts Free Study", thereby removing and potential for bickering.
