I never found the right challenge for this black & white photo of me.

I'm tired of any shot that is trying to be something instead of just being something.

Reminds me of a wise quote I can't remember from where: "Be just what you is, not what you is not. Folks what do this are the happiest lot"

Back in the day there was only B&W..colour wasn't invented yet. That's why they're all monochrome. It's obviously.

My wife and I visited my daughter's first grade classroom to meet the teacher before she started school. The room was actually the same room I attended first grade in 25+ years earlier. When we got home I explained this to her and commented that the room was much brighter and more colorful than when I was in school. My daughter said, "Of course it is Daddy, When you went to school it was in black and white" :-)

Maybe this would be an interesting side challenge. Take your favorite black and white picture, post your best color version of it as a comparision and let people discuss.

And sadly still looking for my marbles. Oh, I have a question, is there a focus knob on the camera?

I do MY old-people pictures in color. And of myself. Nobody else will let me process them the way I process me :-) Except Whiterook. He lets me show his cragginess... But he's not old. Or not as old as me, anyway... And oh, yeah, Kevin let me grunge him up too. He's not old either :-)

Why is it that this site is so obsessed with black and whites with wrinkled old people? It also scores higher if the person is squint.

You like macros? Wine glasses? Water drops? Why not extend to landscapes, portraiture, sport too? Lots of people don't. What's with liking them?

I don't think just any old person shot will do well just because it is in black and white either though. I don't think it is worth trying to figure out why some people like things you don't. You can only judge off your standard, and in their opinions... simply put... its wrong.

Well, your and my opinion then on this website or completely different. Well, actually in photography in general. I don't like any of those types of shots per say. I personally look for "well executed shots", and I don't care the subject matter. Does the photo tell a story? Is the subject compelling? How's the composition? How difficult was the shot to take?

This site mostly likes; a) HDR landscapes, b) still life studio shots in perfect focus, with perfect lighting, with deep color saturation, and now c) old wrinkly B&W's. Sorry, but good photography is not so easily defined. Someone like Natsumi Hayashi would not have scored well on this site, before she was famous. Her entries would have likely been in the bottom half because they weren't HDR, still life's, or B&W wrinkly old people.

But this obsession with this style of photography is considerably over-the-top. Taking a B&W with some old creepy person does not make it a good photography, but every time I see one in a challenge now I know it will score high. Again, the voting on this site is flawed, we all know, but hello?

My girlfriend did this shot of this wrinkled old person and it ribboned.....

It's me......and if you don't like it, I'll come see you and beat the sh*t out of you with my cane!

Pesky, young whippersnappers!

LOL!
By way, I like this shot. I'm not saying I don't like B&W's, but some of the shots that are elevated on this site, are just not very good (IMHO). Plus this shot has the ruggedness of the Marlboro Man, how can you not like that?

Everyone has their own personal preferences.
Everyone is unique in what they feel makes a good photograph.

I don't think it's that higher voting is going on just because it's a B&W portrait, but that it appeals to more than less of the voters. As has been mentioned, B&W has always been the preferred medium for portraits when wanting to show form, light, texture and not have any other distraction. (And as we know, it was at one point the ONLY option for portraits. If one can pull off a beautiful portrait in black and white, it is a bit more challenging for the photographer as you have no brights colors, pretty pinks, twinkly blues, deep greens to help make it a beautiful portrait, all you have is light, shadow, texture and form.

I personally am sick to death of smokey whatevers, liquid drops, wine glasses, babies....but I'm not going to vote them lower because. Remember, the people on this site have been here for varied amounts of time and are at varied points in their photographic journey. Some are trying things they haven't done before, regardless of whether or not others have. The voters have opinions and will vote as they vote. Nothing gonna change that fact, but to say that b&w portraits get better scores is not necessarily true and the fact that they don't appeal to you is not a flaw of the photograph.

Now, get me some damn tea! Children should be seen and not heard!! I'll be sitting in my vat of wrinkle cream....
