Yes and No. Sure, I'd like to get a ribbon some day, but if I got a 7+ and the brown, I'd be very happy as it means the voters thought the image was very good, even if the other images were a bit better. whereas, if I got a Blue with a score of 5.5 or less, not quite as happy.

I guess this is where we differ. Going back to my running days, it was meaningless to run fast if it didn't carry anything with it. There was nothing worse than running a PB but finishing outside of the money; it was just salt in the wound. My motto was always if you're not winning, you're losing.

This is not a physical contest and I'm sure there were MANY runners who would be extremely happy to get a personal best even if they didn't win. We have different agendas. You want to "beat" everyone, I just want to improve. Both are based on the perceptions of the voters for a specific challenge. But, are you "beating" everyone by giving them low scores so you place higher or do you really think the images in the challenges are far below average? Your idea of "if you're not winning, you're losing." is an odd one to me when referring to photography.

Since this is a scores thread, and I'm not even in this challenge, I'm out of here. :-)

Oh, you get it just fine. You've been enlightened more than anyone I've seen in all my years here, so don't pretend it's anything other than what it is.

This is a challenge website though. Whether it be photography, running, or anything measurable, someone has to win. The problem lies with what do you mean by below average. I rate the photographs compared to the other photographs within the challenge. So by definition, half of them have to be below average, it's simply a mathematical construct. That being said, I am normally more stringent the higher up the scale we move.

So you vote everyone else in the challenge low to give yourself a better chance at winning?

Ironically my voting average in challenges I'm not entered in are lower by a substantial margin than challenges where I am entered. Also, someone always get a nine from me in every challenge. Tens I reserve for my absolute favorite photographs, of which I finally gave one out. If my wife approves, I'll see if NiallOTuama wants to sell . There's one thing I've always held true in sports and it's no different here, winning while sacrificing integrity is no way to win at all.

cosmicassassin There's no point in debating the issue of voting any more. To me, average here is 5.5 - my scale is 1-10 of "bad to good" as it says under each image during voting (and there are few I score below 4 and would term "bad", even if the subject matter and style are not my cup of tea) and your scale is 1-10 of "dislike to like" I guess and has to create a bell curve for you. My scores do not have to form a bell curve especially if I think the majority of the images are well done. So I end up with more at the higher end and you end up with more at the lower end of the scale. :-/

In 2 days I have dropped .3 to a 5.49.

Biggest drop I've ever seen in that short of a time frame. I was steadily rising and closing in on a 5.8 Thursday.

And the last day drop has begun. I've lost .26 since this morning.
