The roller coaster ride continues. Up over a 6 again and a high point for this entry.

I'm one considered DNMC by you. I appreciate where you're coming from as well as the way you politely and apologetically explained your vote.
I'm happy with how mine is scoring as well as the great comments (all of them).

I always go by the description. Had I only gone by the title then there would have probably been zero DNMC.
I think the photographers didn't read the description.

I was thinking that perhaps a 6.5 might be able to sneak into the top ten. After all, it's hard to artistically crop off a head.

Geez, score was holding steady all week and then 5 votes roll in in less than 40 minutes and the score drops 0.0865.

So here is a question - did you get hit this morning? I wonder if those in the Money Challenge also got hit at the same time?
I do notice that challenges that have not yet reached 100 votes have a higher 'flucuation'....it seems to hit especially hard in the last 48 hours. |

Yes, it lost about .08 this morning. Voting has been very slow on this challenge. I'd say the biggest loss on my score has been from the last 10 votes. And there have been no comments, since it began dropping. My Money entry is a big bomb, so the low votes today are not hurting it.

I just finished voting. Got back from vacation and time to procrastinate while the house needs to be cleaned.

If there is another voter with low voting averages, your score will drop. But something people don't seem to understand is that scores are entirely meaningless outside of context. Chances are not only your score lowered, but so did everyone else's. The point is, as long as people like myself vote on every entry, your ranking relative to the averages are preserved with absolute score being meaningless except to rank individuals within the challenge.

No, the point for me is NOT my placement relative to others, but my overall score. I'm trying to raise my average so voters like you who think the majority of the images (maybe including mine?) are way below average, aren't helping. :-( |

So you don't care if you finish last with a score of 7.x? I know it's highly improbable, but that is exactly what you're saying.
My question is, what's the point of raising your average since it nets nothing at the end of the day? Unless I'm missing something, isn't the ranking at vote rollover the only thing that matters?

I think maybe you are missing something here Christopher. While for most a high placement in any given challenge is the main goal, some like to also work at goals like raising their overall average in any given year, etc. No doubt there are a lot of trends that would effect whether people can actually raise their average or not. But if enough people who score low on average like yourself show up and start voting a lot, it really dashes the hopes of many people.
Would it really be that hard for you to set say a 5 or 6 as the middle score for this site? If you do that consistently it will not change the outcome of individual challenges much if any- but it would make some people with certain personal goals happy :) |

Yes and No. Sure, I'd like to get a ribbon some day, but if I got a 7+ and the brown, I'd be very happy as it means the voters thought the image was very good, even if the other images were a bit better. whereas, if I got a Blue with a score of 5.5 or less, not quite as happy.

I guess this is where we differ. Going back to my running days, it was meaningless to run fast if it didn't carry anything with it. There was nothing worse than running a PB but finishing outside of the money; it was just salt in the wound. My motto was always if you're not winning, you're losing.

How about I just raise my average to, I don't know, say 8.5, and make everyone happy? I would never ask anyone to change their criteria for voting. It'd be like asking the pro-life/choice crowds to change because hey, it's what the other side wants.
If you could ensure it was the same cast and crew every vote, than I could see wanting to beat averages and whatnot. Since the cast changes from challenge to challenge, I don't see the point in this kind of exercise. Sure the core of voters are likely the same time and time around, but there has to be a good number that differ and thus make comparing averages from one challenge to the next entirely meaningless.
