Is this the admins version of a bad joke?

Why do you say that?

I think it is well timed since I have been looking over what it takes to capture good tectures in plants (leaves mainly) over the weekend.

Exactly my point! As if we didn't have enough flowers as it is!

Well, I am not opposed to flowers, but I would not have been upset if flowers had been exclusively forbidden to broaden a few horizons. ;D

Some people do not take flower pictures all the time and so taking a picture of a flower could be broadening their horizon.

I certainly hope it doesnt have to be an upclose picture of a plant! I all ready have a grand idea =)

Two macro challenges in a row, what?

Botany doesn't have to be flowers. I personally like nice flower photos though.

I quite agree, my entry in the 'Something New II' challenge was my first and so far only flower shot. But there are a too many out there that I bet immediately thought 'floral' when they read the work 'botany'. There is just so much more to plantlife than the more colorful of its representatives.

Just a few things I can think of from previous challenges or other photos:

vast fields of grain or grass blowing in the wind.
moody, mist-swept forest (with or without a river).
a lone tree standing on a hilltop.
carefully manicured lawns along a tree-lined avenue.
a old oak in the back yard with a tire swing hanging from it.
a tree by a river with a rope hanging from it used to swing out into the water.

There are so many more posibilities than just another closeup of flowers reproductive organs.

Botany can get pretty big.

Adams didn't do no little bitty macros. Ansel that is, big man, big camera, big subjects.

Well, I guess here's my excuse to play tourist and visit the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden for the first time.

Another macro based challenge...

It isn't Macro based at all - no more than it's a flower-based challenge. It does have the benefit of making the shots of those who like to take pictures of flowers less likely to be voted down out of frustration.

My personal feeling is that those slews of flower photos that annoy people so do so more because of lack of quality in general than anything else.

Well put. Same goes for all the insect, pet and kids shots.
