Hello all. I've got a really odd problem. I guess first....Hello...new here, looking forward to jumping right in! First my equipment & software, then the problem.

Body: Canon 50d
Lenses: Does matter for this problem.
Images: RAW
Software: Corel Paint Shop Pro x4 for sorting out the good from the bad, and Corel Photo Paint X6 for editing

Ok...so here's my problem, and I think it might be the software. As I am thumbing through my images, tossing out the one that are immediately obviously not good, I'm using the Corel Paint Shopt Pro x4 as I like how easy it is to look through the RAW files. On there, I can see it is receiving and recognizing the image info (body,lens,f-stop,exposure comp, shutter speed, iso, etc). I literally don't do ANYTHING to the images with this program. I pick the ones I know are keepers, and I open them in Corel Photo Paint X6 (Corel's version of Photoshop). Anyway....I do whatever I need to do...adjust for exposure....sharpen a hair...whatever. I save them as 24-bit JPGs at 100% quality...and then *poof* every bit of image info is gone, except for the camera body info showing "Canon 50D".

I guess I can figure that it's Corel Photo Paint X6 doing this...but I didn't have this problem before....so why now? I've been using Corel literally for decades, and would like to think I know it very well....but maybe there's a setting I'm missing?

Anyone have or use Corel that might be able to steer me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I don't know Corel products at all, but I think you're on the right track as far as where the changes are taking place. If so, that's disconcerting. Try downloading a basic freeware viewer like IrfanView and see if that pulls up more info. If the info is truly gone, then look at the Corel Paint X6 preferences; it might be set to strip metadata to save file space, similar to Adobe's "Save for Web and Devices."

Oh, and by the way, welcome to the insane asylum!

kirbic...thanks for the quick reply. I will definitely start digging further into Corel. I had simply assumed the image info is gone...and found it a shame that I couldn't just manually add most of the info back in. I think it's weird that, when you pull up the properties of a file, you can edit in some of the image info...but not others.

Anyway....good idea to try the saved photo in another program. I should have thought of that. I'll actually check the saved version in PhotoPaint. I bet it's gone, though...and I will just have to learn going forward.

Thanks for the welcome!

P.S. It's a shame these contest limit you to photos taken after the contest started. I took a photo that would fit well into the "Framed" contest, but I took it just a few days before the contest started. :(

Update....yep, just checked...and it appears that Corel Photo Paint X6 is stripping the info. Time to go find out where to change those settings...since Corel X5 did not do this to me...so I'm hoping it's not something they hard-coded in...which would be really stupid of them.

So...throwing this out there...any Corel users, if you know how to fix this and can save me hours of searching, I'd be in your debt....thanks!

Why are you using PSP to sort and Photo paint to edit? PaintShop Pro is actually the superior editing application, IMO. Photo paint was Corel's in house editing app and it kind of fell by the wayside after Corel bought Jasc and had PSP. I remember back around '02 I bought a copy of Photopaint and never liked it. I quit using it for PaintShop Pro when it was still a Jasc product. I think they still offer Photopaint, but I think PSP is really the premier product. I would suspect Photo paint has not been updated and can't handle the exif. That's just a theory, since I am not terribly familiar with Photopaint. I think if you moved to using PSP X4 for everything, that would solve the issue.

There may also be a setting in Photopaint to set a default for saving with or without exif.

My own workflow is to use Canon's Digital Photo Professional to review and sort my images, then convert from RAW to JPG or TIF. Then I use PSP X4 to edit.

Hello Christopher....I have been dealing with a problem with imbedding ICC color space in X4(still have not figured that portion out yet) but I think I can answer your question with the image info being stripped.

The key is to check the Save EXIF Info box AND Imbed the ICC profile

Not sure if it is the same in Paint X6 but that is what you have to check to make sure the EXIF data is saved in PS Pro X4

Spiff - I have been using CPP for a very very long time, and it's a bit like the back of my hand. I'm so comfortable and familiar with it, that I barely have to think about what I am doing within it for helping to create my artwork and edit my photos. I use it like most people use Photoshop, and I absolutely love it. For some silly reason it doesn't preview RAW files and I have PSP which is great for previews but I am MUCH less familiar with using for editing photos. In fact I've been reqally frustrated several times, trying to use it for that....and I'm a bit of an old dog, having a hard time learning all over again how to use a new program. My only two real complaints about CPP X6 right now are that it doesn't preview RAW file (minor inconvenience really) and that it appears to be dumping my EXIF data from my images, which is a big problem. I appreciate the advice...and I might HAVE to use PSP going forward on my images...but I'd prefer to not have to abandon my "right hand" if I can help it.

Novack - Still trying to find that option to save or not save the EXIF info, like you pointed out. No luck yet with CPP X6.

Thank you both for your help....I might have to get in touch with Corel directly and ask them. I'll keep this thread updated with what I find.

I can understand that. I tried Photoshop Elements at one time, and was frustrated trying to do the things I had gotten used to doing easily in PSP. I was considering perhaps having to make the move anyway, but Corel fixed some of my major complaints about PSP with upgrades in the X4 release.

One of the issues with asking for software help on DPC, is that answers often presume you are running the latest & greatest Adobe product. For PSP specific questions, my first resort is usually the PaintShop Pro Group on Flickr. I did a group search and found there is also a Corel PhotoPaint Group. It doesn't appear terribly active, however.

If you do decide to move to PSP for editing, let me know and I can steer you to some resources. Perhaps it is time for another PSP side challenge...

Let me know what happens. My experience with Corel tech support is that they will only help with installation problems, then you have to pay, but they still may not have an answer. For what they charge, I can understand they cannot provide free unlimited support. I work in support myself and I know it will be abused by some people, so you have to draw a line.
