Here are a few photos from my most recent model shoot. This was her first shoot and it was hard to get her to smile because she has braces.

Comments and critiques requested. Thanks!

Shot #4 is my favorite - but all are very nice, great focus and very crisp looking.

excellent sharpness. Great portraits.

Also I must say, I find braces hot!

Ok maybe it is because I'm from Iceland and we have the most beautiful women in the world, but this one has not best face I have seen. It look so plastic and I don't know but it does not work for me. Sharp photos just to bad about the model. Hope you didn't pay her much.

Sorry if I'm hars in my answear.

Great photos
She as most newer models has not learned to relax..be natural...be a model.I would tell my models...just be yourself and let me worry about what the photo is going to look like.she needs to smile.
I agree with jmlelii...they look hot on most women.
super photos...be proud of yourself !

I'm not from iceland, but I was thinking the exact same thing. Great photos, not so great model.

I don't know how much experience you have, but the lighting in all these photos is great. Very nice job. I do a gree the model could relax a bit more.

Whether or not the model is "attractive" is totally irrelevant and did not need to be commented on.

I believe we're here to critique the photos, not the subject.

I like them and I like her. She's different to the usual models you see out there and I like that.

#4 is awesome...looks like a 40s style glamour photo...beautiful!
08/08/2004 11:57:28 PM · #11
As an afterthought, the hand in #5 has a soft focus and it kind of takes away from the photo. Otherwise, all great!
08/08/2004 11:57:44 PM · #12
Correct. I indeed posted for critiques on improving the photos, not comments about if you think the model is attractive or not. When shooting portraits, you will not always be able to shoot Scaninavian hotties.

wwwavenger - This was my second model shoot.

Thanks for the comments so far. Any comments on improvements I can make?

Hmmm... I like 1 and 3 the best. Good exposure, shallow DOF, nice pose and expression. (though both shots are essentially the same pose)

#2 needs a little more light on the model (bg competes too much)
#4 is a nice b&w, I just don't like the pose (maybe it's just me)
#5 had potential, but as others said, she needs to relax

Anyway, I think she looks great... give her a little more time in front of the camera and have some fun.

Shot #4 is my favorite. It's very flattering to the model and has very nice tones and contrast to it. Overall, they are all very professional looking shots.

Hey Chris. Nice work. I left comments on 1, 2 & 4. BTW, 4 . . . . . . Great shot, dude. Great.

Since I have never done model photo shoots, I can't really give suggestions for improvements but I can tell you what I like. My favorite is #4 by far. I read the comments left by Kevin and I agree 100%. That is an amazing photo! Love the duotone and it compliments the outfit and her complexion very well. I also like #1 as a basic body shot. Lighting looks very even and no annoying hot spots.

I think the more relaxed poses will come naturally to both you and the models. She is probably just nervous for posing the wrong way or whatnot. Hope all that makes sense! Great work and I enjoyed viewing your photos.

harsh comments, very unnecessary.. could be a daughter or neice or someone special.. just goes to show the mind of modern man and why all the 'best' photos are of hot chicks who look plastic. i think she looks great and #4 is my fav.

Obviously I'm outnumbered on thinking #4 is the worst pose in the lot. :-)

But I have an open mind. So everyone, teach me... what makes the pose in #4 so great?

The things that really disturb me about #4 are:
- The pose looks very unnatural / uncomfortable
- It makes her back almost look hunchback
- It makes her foreground arm look unnaturally skinny
- The strange body position takes away from her face

I do like the eyes and the face. So, for me, a different position of the body while keeping her look would be great. And I *do* like the b&w, the skin texture, the overall tones.

So what does everyone else see in this picture? I'm here to learn...

I think #4 is the best as the model looks the most relaxed. In nearly all the other photos she has a little bit of an awkward look on her face as she is trying to smile without showing her braces which isn't there in #4.
The lighting focus etc in all other images is great.

I like #4 the best as well. As Laurie said, it does have a nice '40s glam look to it.

The great, big, giant pink thumbnail in #5 is a little distracting.

#4 has a nostalgic quality reminiscent of this kind of photo... but of course that's just my opinion, and also Digistoune's. As you know, we both have good taste, so it has to be right. LOL ;o)

Those 2 comments were harsh and I probably would not have said that, but then I would have thought it.

The subject of a photograph really needs to be something special or extraordinary for it to be a great photograph in my opinion. Too many people on here think that if it's right technicaly then it's 90% of it's way to being a good photograph.

Fact of the matter is, the subject does have huge influence on the end result of a photograph.

Anyway, I think those comments would be redundant if she smlied. She looks like she is trying hard not to smile which in turn constrains here face and results in something not as pretty as if she let loose and smiled. like this :D

I like #3 the most, I think it's the most natural looking.

And about the model, she has almost an elven quality, quite cute!

Technically, the shots are all well done.

The model needs to relax and really smile, braces or not. In some of the pics, specifically, #'s 1,3,5, her non-smile seems almost like a smirk.

The only thing I don't like as far as posing is the way her shoulder blocks her chin in #4.

I would guess that if you work with her a few more times, you can get her to relax and be herself.

I have to agree with most people, shot number 4 does it for me. I think it's perfect and the duotone works wonderfully. I am not great photographer but I think I know when I see a good photo and this is definatelly one. Good work, great model.

Cheers,
Mike
