Why is hitting your camera button 100 times without looking more fun than composing photos? I figures since this site is full of photographers, they would enjoy taking pictures the classic way (that is, looking at what you're composing), but hey, I'm not an arty high brow type so what do I know.

so this challenge is most likely not for you
thats alright :)

Not for me at all, but that wasn't my point. My point, question actually, was why would would you think people would "start having fun" in this challenge as opposed to others?

Simply because photographers are so used to thinking about the shot and the settings and the location prior to shooting and then fiddle and chimp and change the settings and composition to get the right image. With this challenge you can just close your eyes and shoot and deal with what you get afterwards...quite refreshing!

Initially I thought of this as a free study but I've changed my mind. If you shoot candids or do any street photography you have probably shot images in this manor. Maybe your eyes are open but you shoot from reflex. No time to frame the shot because you might miss the opportunity. It really requires a little luck so the 100 image limit makes it interesting. Should be a nice challenge omitting landscapes and macro studies. Hope I can capture something worth entering.

I'm cracking up that in such a short period of time, we are on page 5! I think it's a great idea. Literally shoot from the hip. I wonder how many will NOT use automatic focus and really get some crazy stuff. After having had the privilege of judging the Art Challenge, this will have my eyes open (not when taking the photo though) to new ideas and techniques. 100 shots? On one hand, that's a lot. On the other, click click click and 100 will be upon you sooner than you think. I definitely plan on entering. To prove people's honesty, maybe minimal editing would have served best and that's coming from someone who HATES minimal editing.

Let's all shut our eyes and GO!

BTW, the first 100 pictures are only to warm up ;)

Here are few of today's "random captures" that I got (of course, I wont submit them to the challenge, they are just for the fun of it)

LOVE THESE! They are truly beautiful! Just a glimpse of what to expect in the challenge. I hope too many people don't try and "fix" their photo with overdoing the editing. Great shots!

but to take Yo_Spiff's point, i assume you pointed the camera in the general direction and then hit the shutter release. so these could have been done with or without your eyes really being closed. i'd take the challenge to mean "don't look through the viewfinder to frame/compose your shot"... and with 100 takes, 1 is bound to come out how you wanted it.

Additional rule should be added ...advanced editing with your eyes closed!!

03/23/2012 08:34:45 PM · #106
Today, after looking at the Challenge description, I drove to a spot about 75 miles away that I love
and is picturesque, and where I felt safe closing my eyes while handling my camera. I
shot some 288 frames, came home and found one or two that I really, really liked. Using
minimal editing, I prepared one for entry.

So, am I going to be called for 'cheating' because I have an image that is - well - pretty
darn good?

After following the rules as described in the challenge?

Inquiring minds wish to know. (Well, this one does, anyhow.)

Re-read their comments if you need to.

I won't be shooting with my eyes actually closed, as the chance I'll fall down and hurt myself, or worse - the camera, is pretty great. At my age, I'm not fond of the idea of breaking any bones, thanks! But I have been shooting quite randomly at random things, without looking through the viewfinder. It can be very liberating, allow angles you normally wouldn't get, for instance. Also gives you the chance to see without seeing through a viewfinder. I know that when I go out with my camera specifically to shoot for something, I DO see through my viewfinder. I miss a lot that way. This lets you see and hopefully capture the periphery.

As Jan says, if this isn't for you, it isn't for you. But try it - see if you like it. It is only one challenge. If you don't like it, sit it out and wait for the next one.

The whole point is to have fun, isn't it?

I think random is a great word, however you choose to do that. For lots of reasons, I cannot really close my eyes in NYC. But not looking through the viewfinder is fun. I can shoot pointing the camera behind me or over my head or from the hip. I hope I can be serendipitous. I took a whole card full today... first time in a while.

I took some shots with my eyes closed today, but I can't tell them apart from my other shots. I might have to cheat.

I think DPC has just officially "jumped the shark!"

03/23/2012 09:46:14 PM · #112
No blind shark jumping is allowed. This is the eyes closed challenge, not Darwin awards challenge.

I can't believe that you turned me in and got me kicked of for 10 hours!!! Seriously!

What are you going to do if I break out the f-word!!!

Here I go....

Here's my prediction. Gyaban will decide to enter this challenge and right after he closes his eyes and is about to push the shutter button a volcano will shoot out of the ground and as it starts spewing lava an alian mothership with a "baby on board" bumper sticker will come flying from the heavens headed directly for the mouth of the volcano as a giant fire breathing dragon chases after it. 600 validation requests will be sent but the amazing shot will pass muster. And this is how we find out that gyaban is not really a masterful photographer and graphic artist but in fact is more of a photojournalist who is always in the right place at the right time.

It is NOT an Expert Challenge, more and more true of DPC :(

I've actually always assumed that with this shot: ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1521/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_996760.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1521/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_996760.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

He did say that he created it -- but I think it was just being in the right place at the right time. :)

You've always BEEN a cheater, Alice; but not in the photography. Nobody can be that cute without cheating :-)

Is the site officially out of ideas for a challenge?
03/24/2012 10:20:26 AM · #121
I was out and about in a very public place yesterday, and while I didn't literally close my eyes (could have been dangerous) I randomly just lifted my camera around hip/waist high and snapped at intervals through out the day. I did get mostly just crappy out of focus shots or random people very sideways, but I think I got one very interesting shot. I'm also going out and about to another public place tonight and will try again.

Same here. I'm guessing Close Your Eyes = don't use the viewfinder or LCD screen to compose or focus? Having done that before. Eta: So I'm thinking now, find a place to shoot, close your eyes, turn around and shoot. That would be closer to what is wanted from us?

I once saw a film about a blind man who took pics. It's not a documentary or based on true story, AFAIK. Proof(1991) //www.imdb.com/title/tt0102721

Ha! I walked about a mile, would stop, close my eyes and listen. The sounds would draw my attention. The birds, a creak in the trees and the sun kept drawing me. 50 manual focus and the rest auto. It was vary relaxing and I got some I would say are better than my usual.
03/24/2012 11:15:56 AM · #124
I'm going to try actually closing my eyes. If you shoot with your eyes open, you're still viewing the scene, just not through the camera. By viewing the scene, you're still deciding with your eyes what to shoot.

I like the idea of closing your eyes and listening and shooting with your other senses. Not letting your eyes get in the way of your shot. :)
