In Photoshop, if you drop an image onto another one, you have two layers in the same file. How do you reverse that process?

How do I grab one of several layers and save IT - and it alone - as a separate image?
Better still... if I have 5 layers, how do I save each one as its own file in one go?

I was trying to work out apng's - animated PNGs - for an avatar. I had a few screenshots that I needed to layer so I could line them up and crop them to the exact same size, before then separating them again into individual images.
I can't figure out a sane, easy way to achieve that.

Help will be appreciated :-)

Turn off the eyes of the layers except the one of the layer you need to save. Do the same for each layer.

File->Scripts->Export layers to files might do the trick for you. This is on CS4.

ETA: Just tested it... it should work fine. Be aware that it will take a bit to run. What it does is delete all the layers so there is just one left then saves that. It does this as a running operation, so each time it saves, it reloads, re-deletes, then saves. Go have some wine while you wait if you have tons of layers :)

Oh how very interesting! I didn't know visibility impacted saving.... that is very useful to know, thank you!

Wicked awesome! Don't have to sit and wait for it. Just tried it with three layers and that was certainly quick enough.

Thanks a bunch!

Yup- this is how I normally save my photos, as there are times when I like a color version and a BW. So, I'll just save it with my steps used for BW conversion as the top layers, then if I want a color jpeg I'll turn off visibility and export.

Glad to be of help! :)

ETA: 3 isn't bad. I was just thinking of when I did a time lapse of a flower opening and it was like 130 frames or something... so I was envisioning that. Still works, just takes a bit!
