Since getting back into photography, I have found myself jumping from one type of setup to another along with various types of editing techniques. It has become exasperating, keeping me from discovering my style. It is time to find my style as I have become very interested in B&W photography.

My goal is to shoot knowing the final image will be black and white, setting up my parameters, which includes time of day, to achieve the maximum tonal range. Post processing a black and white image to enhance depth, tone, and detail.

I am dedicating myself to only black and white for the remainder of the year and feel I will ribbon before the year is out, a goal at best. I'm sure I will be asking for input throughout the year from everyone and with your help I know I can achieve such goal.

Thanks everyone for giving me the opportunity to get back to doing what I like to do, photography.

Scott

Oooohh... dedication.

Not yet in my photography philosophy. Something to aspire to. I inadvertantly used my camera's B&W setting for the first time 2 weeks ago. But I do know how to PP anything into meaningless B&W, and I like it.

You will only have between 3000 to 81000 DPC'ers checking up on you for the rest of the year. Hehe.

B&W rules!

Nice. I find myself doing much more b&w photography. 7 of my last 10 entries are b&w. Don't forget about the black and white side challenge, I post there from time to time and you can learn a lot from many of the regular posters. Best of luck to you.

See you in the B+W side challenge Scott, lots of comments to be had and tonnes of advice available.
If you do get a golden nugget of advice please share it with me ;-)

I find myself drawn toward black and white. I rarely have the foresight to compose it for b&w when I am shooting -- I should try that. I never use the b&w setting on the camera. I shoot in color and during processing I often convert it to b&w to see how it looks. I recommend Silver Efex Pro 2 for conversion. I think it is amazing. I like your goal to ribbon in b&w -- I may adopt that. I have had 7 b&w shots that have cracked the top 10, but none higher than fourth.

Welcome to the monochrome side, Scott.

I definitely am drawn to b and w; it has an in-built air of classiness.

I guess I’m also focusing on b&w as I currently have four images being voted and two waiting for rollover that are all b&w. I do have one waiting roll over that’s in colour. Maybe, as I get older I’m losing my colour receptors in my vision.

or maybe you realize that the color washes away the underlying beauty.

The one I'm entering tonight is b&w!!

Oh wait... It's supposed to be...

Ok -- the majority of shots I have entered are b&w. It can be so incredibly stunning. I love it when it's done well -- like jagar's stuff.

I switched my camera to the b&w setting tonight, just for being able to preview the sunset shots in b&w. The nice thing is, since I shoot RAW, the cr2 files are still in color. So even though my camera is displaying b&w, the RAW files still have all the info. Sweet combination.

One thing I have learned over the last few days [which most of you already knew] when shooting RAW+jpg, set your camera to B&W so you can see the B&W image on your LCD. This will help you determine in you have you setting correct while still on site. You can use you LCD B&W image to see if you need to adjust contrast, lighting, POV, or something simple changing a persons shirt...as a red shirt is black on a black and white image. Very helpful information on the go. Even though you shoot in Black and White your RAW file will have all of the information your sensor obtains, meaning you will have a RAW file in color and a jpg in Black and White when you go to edit. Best to both worlds.

I really like Black and White. I haven't had a real color challenge entry since January 2009 and currently 1 in challenge and 1 waiting. Never mind that I took a couple years off....I still continued in black and white. color on color challenge may break me of it.

I know what you mean. I was thinking about that last night. Would you be voted down if in the color or color was, white on white or black on black?

When I decided to shoot B&W for the remainder of the year, I did not know how much fun it would be!
