My wife is planning a road trip for us this summer, and she wanted me to ask about nice places to visit between Quebec City and Montreal. Especially those that would appeal to me. (I added that part, and of course, that means interesting photographically).

But hiking, scenery, and even some other attractions would be good.

In Montreal, make sure you eat at Le Garde Manger.
Quebec City, my wife and I really enjoyed Aux Anciens Canadiens and Louis Hebert.

Quebec City will offer tons of stuff in term of photography. Actually, so will Montreal.
If I knew you better, in terms of what you're looking for, I could give much better details. As is, I find it hard to go wrong with those three recommendations on restaurants.

My hubby & I spent 4 days in Quebec city in October 2008. It was one of our favorite get-a-ways ever. You will have to spend some time on the boardwalk in front of the Hotel Frontenac (in Old Quebec city). Photographic opportunities abound! And the food is beyond belief. Have a wonderful time! p.s. I'm jealous:)

Thanks!

Anyone know places in between the two cities? We need to plan there too.

For dining suggestions, I'll note we're both vegetarians (except we eat fish, but not other seafood). So if anyone knows any exceptional vegetarian or "earthy" restaurants, that's great. We also love Indian cuisine.

Cross out Garde Manger then, it's a meat eaters dream come true.

In between the two cities there isn't much. Trois-Riviere and Drummondville, depending on which side of the St. Lawrence you decide to travel. My mother is from Drummondville, and I've been there many times, but in all honesty, I'd rather be in either city instead of the chafe in between.

If you travel on the North side of the St. Lawrence, which I recommend if photography and scenery is what you're after, you could always detour to Parc National de la Mauricie. The North side takes about 20 minutes longer between the two cities. But you could always day trip from Montreal to Mont Tremblant, hiking and photography opportunities galore, or from Quebec City it's about 30 minutes to Parc National de la Jacques Cartier.

As a word of caution, if you don't speak French, outside of Montreal could be rough in some of the rural areas in between the two cities.

We have been there a couple of times, travelling between Montreal and Quebec we stayed in trois riviere, it's an ok place but there's nothing wow about it, also we stayed in Joliette, all I can remember about that is that we eat very well :) Honestly though it was a couple of years ago and i wasn't into photography, it's true when you are your priorities are totally different. We found that for visiting Quebec city it's best to stay in Lévis and get the ferry across, doesn't cost much only takes ten minutes or so, it also gets you right into the old and intresting part, Lévis has cheaper and better accommodation and is in itself a very nice place. Most of the intresting places to visit are a bit further north of Quebec city. On the way to Quebec you could take a detour into the canton-de-l'est, we have very fond memories of Magog and the environs.

Lemme see what I can dredge up from memory:

Quebec City:
Le Vieu Québec - anything within the walled portion of the city
Le Chateau Frontenac,
La basse ville - Portions of the city at the bottom of the hill, particularly the area adjacent to the St.Lawrence,
The Notre Dame de la Victoire church, erected in 1688,
L'ile d'Orleans,
Les Plaines d'Abraham and Le Manège militaire
Les Chutes Montmorency
Le Site Culturel Amérindien Tsonontwan, a native cultural site,
and much much more.

Between Quebec City and Montreal

You might wish to visit le Village d'antan in Drummondville, where the buildings and their occupants depict the life in Quebec in the 19th century

Montreal

Le vieu Montreal,
Le Mont Royal and St. Joseph's Oratory
The biosphere,

There are oodles of locations and the choices you might want to visit depend totally on your tastes and preferences.
