I know we aren't allowed to discuss challenge entries during voting, but it is obvious there is a class project going on for this particular challenge. I think, as a community, we should take this opportunity to educate, motivate, and possibly inspire these potential photographers. I went through and left detailed comments on all the ones that were obviously done as part of the project. I explained what I thought could have been done to help improve the photos and also encouraged them to keep submitting if photography was something they were interested in.

Anyway, I hope others may do the same...

At first I thought they were all SemperMarine's (and his ghost accounts) entries, but this makes more sense. :P

Good call on the suggestion to be helpful, Todd. I will follow your advice.

I'm planning on commenting on those as well. There a re a handful that look like some thought went into them, and the kids may actually have an interest in photography. A little encouragement may get a couple to stick around afterwards.

I have been commenting on every entry for the last few challenges... so I will do this again.

I don't know how much help I can be to them, as I don't know ALL the specifics of photography. But that's alright, I will do what I can. :) Perhaps there are a few in the crowd that really are potential photographers, somewhere like DPC could help them and inspire them even more so. I wish I knew about this place back in 2004, I could REALLY be flourishing by now. But live and learn, and continue to learn, and learn even more, so that living is an enjoyable experience! :)

I want to thank all of you that posted comments on those student project photos. Although they are not of the quality normally seen on this website, they are so excited to be part of a REAL photography challenge! It was very encouraging to see so many comments that were of a helpful nature.

As you can tell... I am their instructor, and although I do not participate myself, I am a big fan of this website and the challenges. I even hope to participate sometime, but go easy on this instructor... I am a novice myself, as web design is more my forte...

This project is meant to throw them out in the "real world" of photography and give them a taste of the challenges and obvious talented competition. I warn them that not all evaluators will be polite, but it is the "real world". So I thank you all for your KIND and helpful remarks!

You're welcome! Though I know there has been contact with the site council before when a HS class participated, I think this is the first time (to my knowledge) that there has been any public input to us from the teacher. I hope the experience wasn't too discouraging for them.

Each comment box includes a small checkbox that the image submitter can use to indicate that the comment was helpful. Many commenters do value having their effort recognized that way, even though it looks insignificant (some folks even keep track of the percentage of comments marked as helpful). Spot checking the student entries, I don't see any of the comments marked as helpful. This suggests that they didn't notice the small checkbox or understand why it is there. Good news is that the checkbox is still available after the challenge is over.

While this is an excellent site for your students to learn on, I think as the teacher you should take the time to point out the rules (I noticed two were disqualified) first and explain how to resize & upload for challenges. At least that way they'd have a fighting chance.

I gave him a 7 because it made me laugh. A floating robot.

One of mine was marked as helpful by AllWeekleyLong. It was cleared, however, because I returned to it and updated my comment.

Not surprising. No doubt many of the students thought they were being clever by doing this. I'm used to it by now.

Added: I went and reviewed the profile pages of those pics that were obviously student entries. Most of them didn't vote, but of those that did, all the others were either reasonable or very high voting averages.

This was a pretty tough challenge for them to start on as well, it was sort of obscure and super prone to DNMC, talk about a meat grinder of a challenge for first time photos. Perhaps waiting until a still life or bw challenge? Hopefully some stick with it, if they can survive that that's about as rough as it gets.
