I have some strobes that came with a transmitter, the strobes have a built in receiver. I am wondering if it is possible to somehow use the strobes with a speedlight without adding a pocket wizard to the equation?

Not 100% sure what ya means but...... Most strobes can fire from "seeing" another flash - a speedlite can do that but not in eTTL (the pre flash will usually trigger the strobe).

I wouldn't go so far as to say "most," but it isn't uncommon.

If you tell us what strobes and what speedlight you're looking to combine, it'd be a lot easier to figure out.

sorry, that would help, I have 2 Hensel 500w strobes and was thinking of using them with a 430 ex 2

The 430 EXII cannot be fired as a dumb slave, so far as I know. It can only be controlled using Canon's commander mode via the 580 or 7D or st-e2. It's a big frustration for Canon flashes, which frankly, are not really made to be user friendly so far as triggering options go. The Hensels likely have an optical slave built in, as many monolights seem to (Hensels among them).

So, you could use your 430 on camera and the Hensels off camera. Or, you could get a hotshoe adapter for the 430 that has a pc sync (I don't think the 430 has a pc sync... but could be wrong...) and then use a pc sync cord. Those are your cheapest options. Beyond that, you're getting separate triggers of some kind.
