I know I might sound silly :) but a very simple question. I have choice between the two and I am debating on which one? I saw photographs of the two in DPC lens section and they both are good. One thing for sure is one is 4 times pricer then the other one :)

What is your thought?

The 1.4 is built better than the plastic 1.8. Also the bokeh is nicer with the faster lens and the extra blade in the diaphragm. If you can afford it, I think it is worth the money for the upgrade. I love my 1.4. Would love to try the 1.2, but out of my price range. This site has good reviews of all these lenses.

Also, the 1.4 has faster and quieter AF

I've been struggling between the same issue. I think I might go with the 1.4 due to the auto focus speed and background blur Spork99 mentioned. The 1.4 seems to be the best relative to its price according to the reviews..

Without a doubt the 1.4 is the best value if you are sensitive to image quality beyond the very basic consideration of sharpness. The build quality is a significant step up from the 1.8, but still not what I'd call excellent. It has, however, survived over 8 years so far in my camera bag without incident. And I've schlepped it all over the world.

1.4 no doubt. If the money is there, you'll regret it big time if you don't buy it.

Oh, and it's a fantastic lens! :)

Eventually I end up buying 50mm 1.8 and that is because someone bought 60d with 50mm 1.8 lens deal that was available sometime last week and person bought it and he sold me that lens for $70. So at the end new lens for $70 and saved $45+. Nice deal I guess!

Heck, for $70, if you decide to upgrade later you can get 100% of your money back on that purchase. I'd say it was a no-brainer.

you can't beat that lens for $70.

i sold my 1.8 and bought a 1.4 and i really don't use it at all. i may sell it and get a wider prime for indoor use.

what wider prime are you thinking of?

probably some sort of 30mm or 28mm. The 50 is just too long indoors on my crop body.

Should we have a new menu item on the website which says "Sell your stuff to other DPCers"? ;)

I ADORE my 1.4 (not meaning to sound like Dr. Seuss here). Anyway, it's my most used lens, I would say. Especially for everyday shots of my kiddos. GREAT lens. MONEY VERY WELL SPENT! I also got the 100mm 1.4 at the same time. Love them both!
Being said, it's time to invest in some new lenses!

Time to hit Amazon. :)

Think he's just a user, not a member. One of the advantages of membership. :)
