Can we have a challenge that requires every participant to score and comment on every entry? And with the scores being public,, not anonymous? I think this could be a refreshing take on DPC. The current system seems to be annoying for more and more people.

I wouldn't have a problem with it... but the number of participants may be limited.

As long as the right people enter it could be a very valuable experience.

Agreed....
For those who do vote low, IF they entered, it could give insight as to why they give low votes. It wouldn't bother me to get a 1 or 2, if someone would explain WHY they gave that score. And I definitely wouldn't hold a grudge against them. I actually would have MORE respect for them... JUSTIFY YOUR REASON. What's the big deal with that?

this would never happen, we couldn't even get full participation for voting in the best of challenge and we had a full two weeks.

Two steps ahead of you. I just put the overview of my reasons in my profile. If someone would like it broken down even more, I'll be happy to oblige.

Altruistic idea but I bet you'd see a bunch of 'nice pic' or 'very cool shot' comments.

Interesting. So your scale is based completely on personal preference rather than image quality, detail, composition, etc? Not that I'm downgrading the way you vote... just trying to figure it out.

you couldn't even get all the people that entered "best of" to view all the images.

400 entries and around 440 views during voting, and we all know that half of the views are the nonmembers.

good luck with that.

That's the problem with the current system - the status quo always wins!

I'm not much of a commenter. I might come close to a total of 100,000 votes given this year. My vote is my comment. You can always ask for critique after the challenge. It is a contest first and in the end the majority will decides who wins. Sounds like a good idea for a side challenge. It kinda of reminds me of eyefetch.com awards system with out the mandates.

Heh! With an average of almost 6 and slew of ribbons in the short time you've been here, you ARE the status quo. :-)

True. That's one of the reasons to stop entering challenges.

I meant that the challenge would have the enforcement of 100% comments and 100% votes, and only those entering will be eligible to vote and comment. My idea is that on the turnover the system will reject the following:
- all entrants with less than 100% of both will have their own entries DQ'd (but without the usual penalty)
- all voters who voted any one vote (e.g. 1 or 10) more than 40% of time will be DQ'd with penalty
- all commenters with more than 20% of identical comments will be DQ'd with penalty
etc

I am sure we could work out the exact rules and have fun with something different!!

How about anyone who submits a photo dictates the score they'd like to receive, and if any voter is more than 1.5 off, they're automatically DQ'ed.

Very clever, let's do it!

I'm with Marion on this. Yeah, 1s are annoying, and yes, it would be nice to know "why", but in the end, does it REALLY matter??? All these efforts trying to force people to do something they don't want to do... those who vote 1s and don't want to justify themselves just won't enter. How will that fix the issue?

What needs to change is the need to make other people justify themselves.

Yes. If a photo is technically flawless but doesn't elicit an emotional reaction or connection, I can't give it a good vote. That's what makes photography, or any art form for that matter, interesting. I'm just annoyed at the members who think people should vote in a particular fashion because they do.

I generally don't vote on challenges I have entered myself (sometimes I do sometimes I don't). I commented and voted on every shot in a recent challenge and was contacted by private message by someone who didn't like the comment I left for them. Not really an incentive to comment in future. I think it is best to accept that everyone has a different voting criteria and/or opinion on what makes a photo interesting to them. Personally I look at whether the image fits the challenge description, the technical aspects of the shot and mostly whether the image just appeals to me personally. In the recent animals in black and white there was a technically great photo of a dog with a dummy duck hanging from it's mouth. There was nothing wrong with the pic at all apart from the fact that I don't like hunting. I marked it lower due to this and left a comment saying so to the photographer. This photographer did not contact me to complain, they accepted that was my opinion and I think that's the way it should be. Anyway, the point is it is hard to stay motivated to comment when you get pm'd over it.
