Flickr - rubbish or just me?

OK - lots of free space but beyond that - hideous unintuitve interface, nothing is where you expect it to be, slow loading, slow viewing, cumbersome navigation and workflow. Ugly looking pages.

Am I doing something wrong

Flickr is rubbish.

Have you tried 500px? Still evolving, but it has some attractive display ideas. And, I do find inspiration in many of the top rated photos, even if popularity is ephemeral. I don't always agree with the Editors' choices, but that's art for you.

Lots of things on FlickR are wrong eg. the name (I'll better not translate it from Dutch to English), the baby colors, the page layouts, etc, etc.

But I like the easy to use interfaces (learning point for DPC) and sometimes I find some interesting things.

I've been on Flickr since a little before DPC, but to me the strength is not in the photo sharing, it's in the forums. There is a user group for almost any piece of hardware, software or special interest I may have.

Added: As an example, If I have a question about how to do something in PaintShop Pro, I will probably not ask it here, as I will get an answer of how to do it in the latest, greatest version of the mud-hut software. I'll go ask in the PaintShop Pro group on Flickr. One of the users in this group is knowledgeable to the point that I PM'd him to ask if he worked for Corel.

The groups that have colourful gifs for commenting are madness.

Never ran across those. I'll have to go look.

Do they have a pretty bad image rights policy too? Someone was saying that to me yesterday, but haven't checked it up yet.

Rumour has it there is an upgrade to the interface in the offing (don't remember where I read that!). Flickr has it's uses.

Like Yo_Spiff says, there are some quite good user groups. I like the Nik and Aperture groups. The Nik group is particularly useful as it moderated actually by some of the Nik guys themselves.

something like this but they are can be worse. Groups force members to comment with their sparkly gifs and wow, wow! comments. Some really great images have 100s of these while they have only a few actual comments where the viewer looked at the picture and gave criticism.

YES!
Flickr - I never quite get it.
And WHAT is up with those obsessive groups? What do they have to gain anyway?

Oh, those. I misunderstood what you were talking about. I avoid those "awards" groups and ignore requests from anybody posting with one of those "awards". Cheap praise. I've seen some complete garbage with dozens of such awards proclaiming how awesome the shots are. A mid pack placement on DPC means more.

It's gaming the system, trying to get attention and perhaps get featured in "Explore". I've occasionally started getting comments from someone on every mediocre photo I post, telling me how awesome it is. When I look at their stream I see dozens of "wow" comments within minutes of their posting something, from all the others that are playing the same thing.

wow that is a lot of hate towards flickr! yes that name, colors, and loading speeds are bad, but to hate on the idea of the website is mean. I get a lot of my inspiration for photos, i.e. texture and the such from there. i find that there is more freedom there and more interesting, creative shots. Yes, there are people there who shouldn't have a camera, some people just are not good at photography. But if you explore enough, you can find some really cool and amazing stuff on there. one of the reasons that people are on there, is because its free, and you get a lot of people searching and exploring the images that are posted to the website.

if you hate it so much, dont go on and deal with it besides creating hate threads/forums. And if you listen to other peoples opinions and then create a desicion from those, you are just as bad as those who voiced them. you need to make up your mind on your own and actually test out the site.

Agree with her on several points, and furthermore, flickr has a huge gravitational field for a lot of photographers. My main qualm with it is the relentless amount of shallow praising that some poeple see, but if you're not there looking for that, and are in search of groups interested in the things you are, you can learn a great deal.

That said, I like 500px too...it's something to behold. Maybe flickr's makeover will lend it some steam to pull ahead again.

For me, it's not about the groups or the comments - I don't really partake in that and I seldom tag my images so they get little traffic. It's the interface that's problematical - the layout of everything seems clunky and cumbersome. I like to peruse images as much as anyone but managing my own content - actually using the thing, the experience frequently frustrates.

I was not hating.... I think it is wonderful someone can navigate a site and find treasure. It may be an age thing with me: I often feel visually assaulted.

One thing Flickr has that I have yet to see on other sites is the spot tagging/commenting feature, which I really like. Other than that, it's archaic and very user-unfriendly.

Like many of the others who commented, I registered with the site years ago
and use it so infrequently that I often have trouble remembering my user name
and password.
It is so confusing that I feel I am inside a paper bag, trying to fight my way out.

Actually, I registered there about the same time I found DPC. Hmmmmm.

My Dutch colleague laughs every time I tell him I am on FlickR!
