I would be up for this.

Pretty good idea! This would, appropriately, throw attention to the tonal range and the gradients. It would be a valuable exercise in photography. And, it would be a great study of light.

Great idea, I agree with Richard that this would be a really useful exercise and I'd love to see the results.

It's a fine challenge topic.

Yes, a great reason to get up for the sunrise. Definitely advanced rules, the tonal range is almost always better without handcuffing ourselves.

Yes a good idea in my view too.

That was an interesting exercise. I decided to check out one of MY sunset pics as a b&w and to my surprise, I actually quite like it!

This is one I would definitely try to make time to shoot for. But only if it is with the advanced rule set. Even if some scenes can be made to look almost as good under basic rules, I find you waste lots of time scouting for a place that doesn't have minor distractions that even a beginner could easily clone out if allowed. I hate wasting time :)

Talk about a challenge that would be hard to vote on...

I love it!

I agree, advance ruleset would be the way to go.

I'm usually up early on the weekends to shoot the sunrise so I hope this one is a go.

yep, this would be very nice.

Sounds like a good challenge to me but the UK members should be given extra time as it's difficult to see a sunrise or sunset when the cloud cover is Blahhhhh, which is pretty much most of the time this time if year.

Was clear this morning driving through the peaks :) well should say is clear 7.11am

100+ sunsets in bw to vote on might be a week long job voting on that one

It sounds like a very challenging challenge. There have been some quite spectacular sunsets around here recently.

Ha, I don't feel sorry for you :) You should try being here. That said, the sun did put in appearance on Monday this week.

Where in the heck am I going to find somewhere to take this shot? There are sooooooo many trees and hills that block the sunrise/sunset. Guess I'm going to have to find somewhere and use it to my advantage. :)

I know I'm late but this might help, I know it did for me.

I usually use the Complete Sun and Moon data for one day page from the US Naval Observatory -- just enter the date and your city/state (USA only -- there's a link to another form for international locations).
