Yes. But I have a feeling that my definition of average may be different.

I use 5 as an average photo, but an average photo (imo) is what my uncle nelbert could take with his point and shoot. So that's why I have a 6+ average. Most of the photos on here are better than uncle nelbert. :)

Bet you I'd love Uncle Nelbert's stuff, Wendy! You know I would. Has he got a website?

Hahaha! You'd hate Nelbert's stuff. It's "stick the nephews in front of a wall and have them paste cheesy smiles on their faces"

However you'd adore Aunt Milicent's stuff! That's the blurry mess side of the family. :P

...and surprisingly enough, my votes have covered the entire range. Do I consider myself a troll for voting some images low... not in the least. Do I have some Posthumous images as favorites...yes I do.

GO figure.

I first vote on an image as to how it has impacted upon me and how well I feel it has met the challenge description. When I come across an image that I don’t at first like or understand I force myself to look at it closer to try and see what the photographer thought was worth sharing with our community. This usually results in me not giving as low a vote as I might if I had just dismissed it.

I have rarely (very rarely) not voted on an entire challenge once I’ve decided to vote on it. I personally don’t feel it is fair to only vote on the shots that appeals to me from a thumbnail.

I usually do. These days. But I don't vote on every challenge. When I first started on DPC I concentrated more on commenting and only voted 20-30% of the challenge. There's no way I have the time to vote and comment on everything.

I also feel more obligation to vote the challenges I am entered in. Pretty much the opposite of some others who won't vote anything they are entered in for concern of bias. The only time I feel biased is when I've given feedback.

I always feel like I'm too harsh when voting, but I guess I'm still just average.

I am like Richard. The first couple of years I averaged 5.5, however the last several years my average has been going up. I have definetly found an appreciation for less than perfect technical images, and have enjoyed more emotive images, rather than just pretty pictures. More emotive images are getting very high marks from me now-a-days, rather than several years ago.

Have been tending towards the happy side for the latter 5k votes I'd say.

I'm like spiff -- I tend to be on the generous side.

But then again, I don't think the majority of shots on DPC are average. :)

Quite a low mark given - it would definitely be higher if I had another decimal place to score with. I use the full scale; very rare for me not to give out both 1s and 10s. The way I work is that anything that bores me gets capped at a 5 on the first pass. After I've given all of my marks out (I pretty much score the whole challenge) I then go through each 'grade band' bumping up for such things as technical proficiency - the degree to which that happens depends on the challenge. I'm likely to give more technical bonus points where the challenge itself has pushed people towards a pretty dull net output. In Free Studies, those technical points are less frequent - both because of the 'freedom to be interesting' issue and the fact that I always give out a number of 10s; the 9s I'll be liking less, the 8s less than that and the 7s less still etc.

Wanting to put sufficient distance between the very best images and the pack (in increments) will mean the 5 band is more highly loaded than the 6 band - hence my 5.1309 average given. I knew there was a point to all that rambling.

Meh, they're all DNMC to me...

Before anyone hurls sharp objects at him, go look at his actual average of 5.6464

You're no fun ;-)

I called him a bastard under my breath.

I'm reasonably close to an average of 5.5, and probably would be closer if I could vote by tenths. A lot of images get a "5" from me that might otherwise get closer to a 5.5. My average vote given is slowly rising, due to a conscious effort the past few years to give more "benefit of the doubt" to images that seem to be close to the 5.5 mark.
